parking/e-brake help: just failed inspection
 
so the truck just failed due to the e-brake not working. the cable has tension and the pedal locks, and will keep the truck from roll on flat ground. but when any gas is applied or on a hill it doesnt work. i've never messed with e-brake's and htis is the only thread i found regarding, but its for 04-08 and i wasnt sure if there is a difference.

i'd like to try and fix it myself, but im a bit pressed for time and need it done in a week before a road-trip. so what all would be involved, or whats a good estimate of what a shop would charge? thanks! :rocker:

Just went out and tried to adjust them, and no improvement. The one shop I could get ahold of quoted $200-$250. That's a bit high it seems

The e-brake is essentially a drum brake housed inside the (rear) rotors. When I got my truck, the e-brake didn't work, so I took the wheels off, removed the caliper and bracket,then the rotor. There was absolutely no meat on the e-shoes. Check this out and adjust accordingly. It's not hard work... just a little time consuming.

Yeah, just pulled the tire on one side to check, but it seems the rotor was frozen to the axle. I'm going to hit it with penetrating oil and order some shoes and hope I can get the damn things off on Saturday

Use a piece of wood and (not too hard) hit it with a hammer while rotating. It'll come off

Failed inspection for non working E brake? How fun. Half of my cars growing up would have never made it on the road. Seems a bit unnecessary to me.

we tried to get it off with a rubber mallet and had no luck at all. will try again, gonna go ahead and order parts now. not sure what else i will need other than the shoes

I got the Hardware kit also... replace everything. I don't think a rubber mallet will shock the rotor enough to come off. A piece of wood and a good smack with a real hammer

Damn. So I'll need two hardware kits and two shoes? Prays cost is jumping higher than I expected. Gotta love how this stiff happens at the worst times. Damn near $100

That's about right for parts, the hardware kit could be optional, but for the little extra, it's nice using new stuff. I've done this fix alot and plan on doing it again soon, real easy. It takes maybe an hour to do and it'll cost you $100 so both ways you're better off than taking it to someone.

yup, ordered 2 shoes, thae parts kit and some cleaner. gotta love Advance. buy online and pick up in-store and save $25 :banana:

the part that sucks is having to spend my last saturday off before starting a new job working on the truck

Really? The hardware kit should be for both sides, as with the E-shoes should be for both sides. Didn't know they would be sold as one pair only. check your packages

Yeah, the shoes are sold in packages of 2, so I bought 2 Pairs. And the hardware kit does cover both sides.

so you had to remove the caliper brackets to remove the rotors?

If I remember correctly, yes. I know with the fronts the bracket has to come off to get the rotor off. I'm pretty sure (not 100% just sitting here) the rears would be the same type of deal

Just look to see if anything is impeding the face of the rotor

Rears, take the 2 10mm? bolts out, slide caliper off and the rotor should come off, ideally. You might have to back off the ebrakes adjuster and bang the f out of the rotor to get it off. Antiseize the hub after so no more sticky sticky rusted rotor to hub.

Looks like this thread must be solved.

This is really easy and once it is apart goes back together in less than 15 minutes.

Parts at Autozone: Pads-$21 both sides, Rotor-$35 each, Shoes-$21 both sides, Brake Hardware Kit-$17 for both sides, Caliper-$35 each

Not all the parts are necessary, that would be a nearly full rebuild short of the backing plate, and caliper mounting plate.

Here are the steps to replacing the e-brake (at least on a 1997 expedition/f150).

1) block front wheels, front and back
2) loosen lug nuts
3) jack up rear end
4) Jack stands for safety
5) remove lug nuts and wheel
6) remove bolts at the back of caliper (be gentle, they snap)
7) lift caliper and pad up and out of rails
8) use some PB around the lugs to help break free the rotor/hub from the spindle, use a piece of wood and hammer to loosen the rotor. there is only one slot on a 97 in the backing bracket. Once loose use a screwdriver under the hub to shim it and gain a little leverage as it is easier to work from two sides when walking off the rotor. Chances are the shoes are a mess inside and will want to prevent you from removing the rotor. Take your time and work it loose.
9) take a picture or get a thorough look at what things look like and where your springs and adjuster go.
10) remove shoes
11) use PB plaster or some type of lubricant on any moving parts particularly around the cable and the mechanism that expand the brake shoes and lubricate them with some brake grease or even waterproof silicon.
12) Use a break hardware kit and replace everything, they are cheap
13) put it back together in reverse. Good luck

My cables work but my hardware, rotors, and e-brake pads were shot...I gutted the e-brakes and put the rotors on...I plan on using a line lock for mine...
