Transmission Flush?

I went to a local tire/auto care center my family has been going to for a whil and I got a quote for regular maintenence on the transmission and the service manager told me not to have some fluid and a filter change but he recomended a full transmission flush? is this a good route to go or not? i think he said they would put Valvoline transmax fluid in it which he said is better than ford motorcraft tranny fluid, is this also true or am I being mislead? thanks for any info, it is much appreciated.

It really depends on the past maintenance on the transmission. If the fluids have been changed regularly you could probably get away with a flush without any damage, but if the fluid has been neglected I would just do a pan fluid change. I have not heard of any trans flushes in neglected transmissions that didn't eventually lead to failure.

Personally I would stay away from it.

i wouldnt do it. alot of people that do the "flush" (as apposed to a exchange) have their trannys go out because it loosens up some buildup and clogs the trans. i would just drop the pan and change the filter.

Using a machine to do a fluid *EXCHANGE* is fine. Do NOT let them use any flushing chemicals or use any kind of machine that doesn't simply use the tranny pump to do the work with the engine running. Valvoline is good fluid, but I don't think it's any better than Motorcraft. Whatever fluid you use, make sure it meets Mercon V specs.

Having done many of the flushes, never had one come back for a faliure. The nice thing about the flush is it removes all the old fluid and not just what is in the pan.

If it hasnt been changed in over 75k miles dont do anything at all. You will cause more problems. I have been there and done that.
