Dealing with cold weather

so this year i moved from the desert in southern utah to the freezing cold of eastern wyoming. before i moved i went through my cooling system to make sure i was good till -30. here in laramie in the winter it gets below 0 on some nights. is there anything else i need to do to make sure my truck is good in this weather? Its my first time dealing with snow and freezing cold temps.

thanks

alex

Cold weather takes a toll on the battery. Not much you can really do about it but if it is an older battery it is something to keep in mind and may want to replace.

Before I had a house with a garage and my vehicle sat outside all the time I would put Heet fuel line antifreeze in the fuel tank when I would fill up with gas.

Install a circulating tank type block heater.

I didn't have any problems with my truck when I was in ND and it got well below -30. If you can install a block heater. I have one, but never have plugged it in. It goes in the spot of one of the freeze plugs.

The freeze plug heater is not a circulating tank heater. The circulating heater tees into a heater hose and taps off the petc0ck or tees into the lower radiator hose.

well after looking through some different block heaters I'm going to get this one that glc recommended. I haven't found anyone on this site with pictures of how they installed theirs so I'll post pictures when I get it installed.

IMO a block heater is not 100% needed here in laramie... but there is nothing wrong with being cautious.

One plus I would like is having hot air as soon as you get in your truck! and not having to start 10 mins before wanting to leave.

I'm just a couple hours South of you guys on 287. I started a thread about a week ago debating whether to get a block heater or a remote start. I'm leaning toward both. I don't think anybody has put any links in there...but it might give you some better search terms when looking into your different engine heaters.

There's also another thread that rednutbow and I have both commented on about some whining when you start your truck in these sub-zero temps. It sucks but I think they all do it.

I've never gone wheeling North of Loveland...but if any of you guys are ever South of Fort Collins hitting the trails, drop me a line!

The circulating water heater is good for you (quick heat) but if you want to do your engine a favor, get a heating pad for the oil pan!
