catalytic converters

I have a 97 f150 xlt 4.6 with Gotts Mod and a Dynomax Bullet. How many catalytic converters do i have and how many do i need to pass smog? I want to take them off, but California law requires you to pass smog.

You have 2, one on each bank. California as far as I know, is one of the strictest states to pass smog, which im guessing means you will have to keep them both

You have two cats and two pre-cats. so you have four. As far as you being in California i def wouldn't take them off but there might be some aftermarket ones that meet your states requirements.

These trucks don't have pre-cats. You have four converters. You need all four in Cali.

I always thought they were pre cats and was considered part of the cat itself as one unit. My bad.

If you are considering buying new ones (or high flow) realize that the cats must be specifically made for Cali specs. Most professional shops won't install new cats unless they are Cali specific. In January 09, new emission laws were passed that caused all this...as a reference, here are some magnaflow cat part numbers that are Cali specific 47176 and 47206
