5.4 swap power steering problems

While I was doing my 5.4 swap I had to disconnect the PS pump, I also had to remove one of the lines to get to one of the bolts. Half way through the swap my buddy bought my 8 rib setup. Thats irrelevant, because I'm almost positive I checked the diameter of the pulleys and they were the same but I'll mention it anyways, since I'm stumped. When the truck is idling or going very slow like to pull in a parking spot the wheel fights me a little bit and there is some pressure. Just enough to be annoying. It does whine a bit but my old one did too. We lost a lot of fluid when we swapped pumps, but did it with no motor in the truck. I just topped off the reservoir with PS Fluid. I've done some searching online and am now wondering if there is air in the system? Anyone else experience this?

It may be possible to have some air in the system but I wouldn't think that it would stay "locked" in. I would assume that it would get worked out and back to the reservoir?

You might want to look at the connection of the (EVO)
Electronic Variable Orifice.

You can bleed the air out of the system by parking and running the truck and cranking the wheel side to side. however driving around should have done the same thing. Just by chance have you rechecked the fluid?

I would assume the air is out as well...
I'm not sure my truck even has an Electronic Variable Orifice.... Thought that was for navi and expo
I have "checked the fluid" by glancing at the side of the cup. Shows normal. Upon further reading I noticed a lot of guys running ATF instead of PS fluid? What's the story on that?

What did the motor in your truck come from? it has the original pump on it correct?

ATF vs PS fluid can be a heated debate.

01 or 02...
No like I said I used one from a mustang- that worked before I removed it.. As I recall the pulley diameter was the same across the 8 to 6 rib.
Interesting on the ATF vs PS Fluid. I don't really care as long as it works. It just seams logical that PS FLUID works for the PS PUMP. lol unless I'm very mistaken.

I'm not sure if it has the EVO or not?

ATF can be more stable to changes in temperature than PS fluid, It also has additives that clean, and in most auto 20+ yrs old shouldn't be an issue. however in some newer cars it might. Also if you've got a leak sometimes the ATF will cause the seal to swell and stop the leak. Other times it might eat the seal causing a significant leak.

I'm not sure what ford made the seals out of in these power steering systems, so ?????

Seals might be NBR material.

It is recommended per manual to use ATF for our trucks, not sure about a stang pump though.

the whine is from air being trapped in the system. and yes you can use atf fluid instead of ps fluid.

Ford specifies Mercon ATF, not power steering fluid.

I'm sure, he doesn't have EVO. That's an Expy/Nav thing. Force flush (while she's running). Use Amsoil ATF.

I did this about 3 years ago. It works.

Good Luck.

coobies5 and jbrew were both right. Air was definitely in it. I flushed it out and replaced with ATF, works great now. Thanks guys!

Stang pump is apparently the same, as most of the accessories are. The shop I did this at specializes in mod motors particularly mustangs so the parts are plentiful.

Glad it worked out for yuh. Yea , when I flushed mine, I used Royal Purple ATF to help clean it out, since I had a little left on the shelf. Flushed that thru, then followed up with Amsoil ATF.

The PS hasn't made a peep since.

Completely off topic but I LLLLOVVEE the power of the 5.4. If I would have driven one before I bought my 4.6 I would have never bought it. I still don't have the 5.4 tune in it yet, so hopefully it will get better. I've noticed it bucking ever so slightly at 45 mph after getting into overdrive. its hard to pick out over the bumps in the road but I barley feel it. Trying to replicate it is hard. I'm not sure what that's about. I put the new converter in, and filled it back up with mercon v, trans feels good after that small spot and its only if i sit on it.

Low grade misfire - plugs and/or cops.
