Gas mileage question
Gas mileage question
Hi guys, I have a question. I know a lot of people are going to say "Look at the specs...", but I want real life info. The sticker on a truck would say 15-16 city and 18 highway. I know it can't be that good. So, what is everyone getting as far as mpg goes? I'm trying to decide between an F150 and a jeep, and the last F150 I looked at (1995) got about 10 mpg. Does this year range get better than that? If so, how much and what can I do to improve mpg?
Got a 98 Supercab with the 4.6L, and auto tranny, and I get right around 14 average if I keep my foot out of it and no towing, and thats mixed driving city/highway/back roads. Also noticed a slight improvement when I put my tonneau cover on, but not enough to justify buying one (I already owned it).

No offense, but not this again...

Here's what my dad told me when I bought my truck and I was concerned about gas mileage. "You're buying a truck, gas mileage shouldn't be your concern. You're going to get bad gas mileage, one or two miles here or there is virtually irrelevant."
But following suit, unloaded cruising on the highway I can get around 16 (surprisingly) 4.6 Scab 4X4. I get 10 when I tow my travel trailer (19').

I'm running a 5.4 in a 98 f150 single cab longbox, 4x4. Highway is very consistent at 21mpg. Around town and stop and go, its between 12 and 16 usually. Driving around in the mountains about 25mph I get around 14mpg.
Tires are stock size, and other than the 5.4 with the 4.6 TC, I modded the exhaust and cut out the pre-cats. Did the Gotts mod too. but other than that the truck is setup as it came from the factory.

2000 5.4 4x4 on highway tires stock size 15 city,18-19 highway.. 31 BFG A/T 12-14 city/15-17 highway.. towing boat 10 flat.. all stock truck.. I did not buy a truck for MPG i got it cuz i need it and it was a great deal..
You can also get an idea by visiting www.fuelly.com . There you can look at various years and see the average MPGs. I have a SCREW with 5.4L V8, 3.73 gears, intake, exhaust, stock tires although slightly more aggressive tread pattern and I get around 14 city and upper 14s if all highway. I am still searching for better mileage...but these Fords just don't get them...unless you go get a 2011!----DirtySCREW
98 F150 Scab, 4.6 and M5OD.
On the road, cruise set at about 72 I'll see 20+. Loaded, pulling a trailer, on the road I've seen from a low of 13 to a high of 16+.
Normal, everyday driving I average a bit over 15, depending on the highway/city splits.
Stock tires and wheels, no computer kit installed.
18-19 city, 22-24.5 hiway. 2004 Supercrew, 4.6. You also have to remember that driving is more than keeping it outa the ditches. I have a good friend with a 2003 Dodge Quad cab with the 4.7. He gets 7-8 town, 11-12 hiway. With me driving his truck, I get about 16-17 town and as good as 22 hiway.
