4x4 wont engage

hello

im having a problem with my 97 5 speed f150 when i pull the 4wd lever the light on the gauge cluster gets lit even when i activate the low range the low range light gets lit but the 4x4 dosent really work i got this problem 2 weeks ago before that it was working fine

I bet you have a broken vacuum line for the 4 x4 engage. Look right behind the battery to where the vacuum lines go into the solenoids attached to the firewall.

The problem here is that over the years, the battery fumes which are corrosive will eat throught the plastic lines. This is a common problem as Ford decided to route the vacuum lines for both the 4 x4 and the environmental vacuum lines right behind the battery. I went to Pick N pull and for about $20 got good replacement lines, and replaced the leaking lines. I then placed protective covers around all the lines I could right into the solenoid, and wrapped this in electrical tape. This should prevent a re-ocurence of the fumes rotting the lines...
