Still NOT getting the MPGs I'd hoped for!!!
Bosch supplies O2 sensors for Ford and at Ford specifications. Bosch O2 sensors are one of the best for these engines. They might even be the best ? I'm not sure because theres not much data on the Motorcraft sensors as of yet or that I could find in the past. Just what Justin (VMP) pointed out from a tuningg aspect. Motorcraft sensors are smooth and stable where Bosch is unstable and jumpy according to graph differences. From my take on that, -a stable sensor SHOULD improve performance. Improved Economy is usually a bi-product of better performance.
Still, - it may take a couple tanks of fuel before you really see how much of difference.
BTW- Yes, the O2's you pulled out ARE Motorcraft sensors. I've heard that some engines did indeed come from the factory with the Motorcraft part. The majority came with the Bosch part.
Keep us updated DirtySCREW. Good Luck.

Jbrew----finally got a chance to check out the accelerator cable. It is NOT cabled up anywhere. I'm at a loss as far as removing the TB spacer. I mean, I found the bolts..but when I move the accelerator cable bracket it either puts the cable in a bind OR mainly keeps the TB OPEN. And I KNOW with the TB staying open I ain't gonna gain any mileage.
I'm all ears for any suggestions. It almost seems like a previous owner (I'm the 3rd owner of this truck) replaced the cable with a shorter one. I dunno if thats true or not, but just what it seems like. The truck runs good right now and I'm debating whether or not its worth the "chance" on better mileage by removing the TB spacer versus screwing something up and having a bigger problem on my hand. I may run a few tanks to get a base line on if the new MC o2 sensors are doing anything.-----DirtySCREW

02FORD4X4-------This is a quote from the Gas mileage question thread by Ford4Life: "2000 5.4 4x4 on highway tires stock size 15 city,18-19 highway.. 31 BFG A/T 12-14 city/15-17 highway.. towing boat 10 flat.. all stock truck.. I did not buy a truck for MPG i got it cuz i need it and it was a great deal.."
I understand I have a truck, but I can't even get 15 MPGs on the highway when I have done mods that should net better mileage AND I can promise I drive conservatively to get the better mileage. That's what I'm upset about. I'm glad Ford4Life and others are getting decent to good gas mileage....I just want it too!---DirtySCREW

I guess you could always pretend that there was an egg between your foot and the accelerator.
Yea, but 21 mpg in this model year, w/5.4L is impossible ? Do you have two of those Tornado's in your intake or something ? Come-on, tell us your secret..

2. With the throttle and cruise cables still in position, flip the cable guide plate and clean w/mineral spirits. Also clean the cable plate bolt bosses on the intake itself.
3. Cake up the top of the bolt bosses heavy w/chalk.
4. Now take the cable plate that you cleaned, while taking the slack out of the cables, carefully set it down onto the chalk covered bosses, - keeping it aligned best that can (you can re-align accurately later). Push down on the plate to mark from boss chalk.
That's one way to mark it from front to back perfectly. Side to side can be adjusted once you remove it.
Drill new holes, - the plate will except new holes without damaging or causing problems in the future when/if you need a new cables. You also don't have to be super precise. It's the MAF,IAC and TPS that controls and ciphers idle for yuh. Your cable can be a little loose, in fact, they usually are, so don't sweat that. Just don't get it super tight, - that's not necessary.
So - an Idea for yuh anyway. - Personally, I wouldn't want the spacer on there, - it's not suppose to be there and the throttle body spacer idea was a gimmick for factory stock engines. I don't know that getting rid of it will help in this case, but I do know it doesn't belong lol.
Thanks for the reply, but I have tried various speeds and nothing seems to really help. I'm only pulling 1950-2000 RPMs at 70 MPH. That's not a big load on the engine.---DirtySCREW
I haven't read all the pages so it may have already been brought up but is your tranny shifting at proper shift points? I have an 03 screw with 5.4 and driving to and from work which is 15 miles city and 20 miles hwy in the hills of TN and I average 16 to 16.5 mpg and I would say I drive aggressively. By the way the truck is stock. Good luck on getting your truck fixed sorry to hear about the miss fortune.
I'm running the 5.4 on the 4.6 tune, so it might be a little on the lean side, however the plugs are very normal looking, and the truck runs great so I think that might be part of where I'm getting some MPGs. Other than running the 4.6 TC behind the 5.4 the rest of the truck is stock, ohh and the gotts mod. 98 single cab longbox, with no other mods.
The O2 Sensors are factory Bosch, The MAS is from the 4.6, Also I'm using Iridium plugs, with nickel plated threads.
I'm easy on the gas getting up to highway speeds. I rarely if ever put some stank on it. Actually I've only flat hammered the pedal twice, both times all it wanted to do was kick the *** end loose.
With the 4.6 TC behind the 5.4 this truck can do some nasty burnouts. Other than that I really dont want to blow the tranny up.
