head lamp went out while driving

97 V6 regular cab regular bed 54k miles

After some repeated ON-OFF-ON of head lamp switch, light came back on and I completed the trip. What was strange was when I pulled the high beam lever and held at that position, head lamp came back on. Is the lamp filament is going bad or switch itself going bad? I will of course replace both for safety. I just wonder if there is another part/reason for this problem. Thanks.

I would say its a safe bet that the bulb is bad. If the filament for the low beam splits, it IS possible for it to make contact again after hitting a bump or two causing it to come on after a few flips of the switch. Ive had one go on and off hitting bumps... looked like a strobe at a club. Haha. The fact that your high beam still worked was simply due to it being a seperate filament (within the same bulb) altogether.

Start with a bulb.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was going to replace both the switch and the bulb. But after reading your post, the bulb appears to be the prime culprit.
