F150 Towing Question

Hi All,

I have a dumb questions and am just looking for general answers.

My wife wants an Expedition (97 to 03). I was wondering how the towing capacity of the Expo stands up to the F150. I currently have a '98 XLT 4.6L and am limited dby the size of toy hauler I can pull. Would an Expedition with a 5.4L have that much more towing capacity? How would it stack up to an F150 with a 5.4?

Thanks.

Here is the most basic parameter you must adhere to to be legal and within the truck's specs.
Find out what your truck's max "gross combined weight" rating is, then you will know the max trailer weight you can pull.
Keep in mind the "combine weight" includes all passengers, any other loads of fuel, water, propane, gear etc.
Here is an example you can follow by pluggung in your max GCW.
Suppose your truck is speced for 12,000 lbs max gross combined weight and your truck weighs 6500 lbs dry.
The 'example' max towing weight would be 12,000 minus 6500 = 5500 lbs max to be up to full spec.
Most toy haulers would be over that weight by the time you have everything loaded and all items of weight in the truck and trailer.
The max gross depends on the motor size, the gearing, the year and some other equippages.
My advice is, if you do a lot of off road sports and will be doing it some years is to invest in an F250 HD Gas or Diesel.
The Diesel will far out pull a gas motor under high weight and terain.
BTW,do not depend on a trailer salesman to tell you accuratly what you can pull unless he shows you how he comes to his position, based on accurate specs for your truck and the real weight of the trailer you select..
Good luck.
