Any power difference between 03 and 06 5.4L

I currently have an 06 crew with the 5.4L and I don't like it. I'm looking at an 03 crew with the 5.4L. Is there a difference in power between the 06 5.4 and the 03? What about gas mileage. Thanks in advance for any input.

Yes, there is a difference.

Your year 5.4 has a 3 valve motor, where as the 99-03 have a 2 valve setup in what is called the PI heads. The 03 models had around 260 hp from the factory and the newer models had around 300 hp.

While there is a difference, if you select a vehicle with the correct gearing you will probably be unable to tell a difference. And if you are dissatisfied with the power output, you can always add performance mods.

"they" say the 06 has more power-the 3v is more powerful then the 2v.. Last year though, I test drove a 2010 3v and was NOT impressed. "they" say the 3v responds really well to aftermarket tuners. The stock 2010 I drove though could not keep up with my 99..

The 06 is a lot heavier truck, so the more powerful engine is pretty much a wash. The 03 also has a throttle cable so it will probably "feel" more responsive. Gas mileage is pretty lousy on both.

I pull a travel trailer and this 06 pulls it well, I'm wondering if the 03 will pull it similarly. I understand the tanks are pretty small on the 03 crews, do they have an 87L (23 gal) tank? My 06 has a 110L tank (29 gal). I guess I would have similar mileage but would be filling up more.

This is the truck, a Ford mechanic traded it in, (he was the original owner), 118,000 km (73,000 mi), apparently its mint.

What are you hoping to gain by swapping to the 03?

I like the comfort and the look of the older gen F150's. I had an 01 for 8 years and loved it, but it was a 4.6L extended cab, I wanted more cab space and the bigger motor but could not find a nice 03 at the time.

My gut feeling is my 99 (3.73) was the fastest F150 I ever drove, but there was no Screw until 01, so that was a lighter Scab. The throttle response was crazy fast.

Neither my 99 Scab (3.73) nor my 01 Screw (3.55) could get 16mpg on the highway, but my 08 Screw (3.73) will get over 17mpg easy.

It is rare I get 16 in my 99. in the summer I can get 15+ driving nice. Winter 13-14 if I'm lucky.. got 17 on one tank once in Montana cruising the freeway up there. I can get 16+ doing 75 on pretty flat freeway normally..

The factory tune absolutely blows for the 3 valve and it's only gotten worse. I've read that at least a 1/2 dozen times and believe it. I've also heard they have only tuned up the Raptors 5.4L; -but the 6.2 off the lot should be much better than it is.

Fords general public trucks are seriously under tuned. Trust me, the three valves bad *** when tuned right, - they even sound allot better.

Compared to my 01, I find my 06 sounds like cr%#! I have a FM 50 delta flow on it and it sounds ok while at low rpm, but stomp on it and it has a hiss which sounds terrible. Maybe it's the muffler?

You should be looking at a custom tune from VMP or Troyer!! You will fill like you bought a diffrent truck! My heavy 06 4x4 flys with my custom tune and my 3" tube set up. I'll post a video where you can see for your self how the truck runs and sounds!
