CEL: Codes P0401 & P0455

I have a 97 F150 4x4 with 143k miles, i have pulled some a couple codes from my truck. Those codes are a P0401 & P0455, i have pulled these codes before and since changed the EGR Valve, however it has not solved my problem. My problem is my truck is using some oil and every so ofter i crank it a large cloud of white smoke comes out the exhaust. My concern is that its going to begin using more oil than i am used too and will cause serious problems if the oil level gets too low. Its using about a quart of oil every 1k miles. The P0455 code Autozone tells me is related to the gas cap, however about 2 months ago i replace the gas cap with a new one and reset the codes and it came back on. Can someone tell me what i need to look for?

The P0455 code problem is possibly the EVAP canister purge valve.

hey, the p0455 code is for failure to pressurize in the fuel system, which most commonly is a gas cap. and the p0401 is triggered by an 02 sensor usually the sensor its self has failed but if your smoking, it probably has a burnt valve and the smoke and lean run fowled your o2 sensors and the evap leak is any where between your gas cap to the fuel injector, hope it helped.

Had that one on my Expy, used a small screw driver and took it apart. Clean the screen and it hasen't come back on.
Mine was excessive fuel tank pressure though-might not be the same thing.

Oil consumption has little relation to the codes you have.
It's just a high mileage motor that is using more oil.
The 401 code is a low flow test failure.
White out of the exhaust is usually related to coolant being passed thru the motor from some source like a head gasket failure etc.
Excess oil or fuel is usually black to dark grey smoke.
So you have a varity of issues to address.
Good luck.

P0401 is insufficiant egr flow. You have carbon buildup under the sensor and/or port. A good cleaning with carb or throttle body cleaner will fix you right up.

Try an "advanced search" here for instructions on cleaning the egr and port.

You have a carbon buildup under the egr sensor and inside the egr port. Nothing wrong with the sensor itself. A good cleaning of the port and under the egr sensor should fix you up wrt the P0401.
