Intake & Exhaust Questions

Right now I have a MAG Performance CAI and a SIDO Magnaflow muffler. Truck is an 04 F150 Heritage with 4.6L.

There is a brand new Edelbrock 75MM Throttle Body on craigslist for $150, I was wondering if anyone has one of these, and if they are worth the money.

I am also considering headers, debating between shortys and long tubes. A shorty setup would obviously be a lot cheaper because they just bolt up, but what would be the real difference between them and long tubes.

Thanks

What is your overall goal? Is it more of a daily driver?

In regards to the throttle body, sure it will net you some gains, however you'll need to compliment it with upgrades to the rest of the system. You'll still be choked by your stock headers and cats. To me it's not worth it to add a throttle body without upgrading the headers too (to maximize gains). I personally would add a tuner before I do the TB.

In regards to headers, LTs will gain you more tq and power across the board compared to shorty's. I don't think shortys are worth it (we've tested them from Camaros to Mustangs). I'm not saying they're bad...just not my cup of tea. Also if you do LT's, might as well upgrade your cats and go true duals too (that will maximize your power gains).

Good luck!

A larger than stock throttle body really only is beneficial on boosted applications.

Or some serious Engine/head work, LT headers, 90mm MAF etc, etc..

Yea, a blower might even be cheaper than all that lol.

Thing is, as said, -you really can't use a larger TB unless you need the air, you don't unless your hiding something lol.

Well put Jbrew, what a lot of people dont realize is that yeah it sounds better having more airflow, but if your engine is not setup for it i.e. cams and heads and exhaust then its pretty much just a sticker to put in your signature block.

Haha..d'oh I completely brain farted and failed to mention the rest of the induction pathways including heads/cam etc. Needless to say, I believe the belief is unanimous that a TB at this point in time isn't worth your money.

All right, thanks. That all makes sense, that's how I was leaning anyway, just seeing one for $150 made me think. I'm looking towards longtube headers right now, but I've read too many horror stories of them not fitting that I'm a little scared off at this point.

What are you trying to aim for? Just more power? Easier alternatives are to:

1) Get a tuner/custom tune
2) High Flow cats
3) Go True duals

I wouldn't go headers unless you're cats and exhaust are upgraded or will be soon after. It's always good and the easiest to start on both ends with upgrades (ie CAI up front and exhaust at the back). Once that's done you should work your way either front to back or back to front. There's no point in upgrading random elements in the middle as they will inevitably be chocked by a component down the line. In your case, upgrading CAI and headers but not doing anything to heads/cam and/or cats and exhaust. Did that make sense?

We've built many monster powered cars (mostly Camaros/Mustangs) and see many run into this situation before understanding the ramifications. They end up spending money uselessly where they could have spent it on more useful mods.

Good luck with your decisions and good job asking the questions on the forums!
