oil filter question

I usually buy the Fram TG2 oil filter, but I want to know if there is an alternative that is shorter than this particular filter. The filter is in a really tight spot, and having a filter shorter by about 1-2 inches would be really helpful.

Shorter would mean less filtration element which would mean lees effective filter. With that said I find that frams housing is weak and would never put one on my truck.

well each brand has its own style to it. Weather it be longer or shoter, or has a no slip surface but, most ford have the oil filter in a tight spot. If you cant find one shorter just try turning your wheels to give a little more space. That helps me pot alot when i changemy filter.

Change your oil hot, use a motorcraft filter and mobil 1 oil , after draining old oil, fill the filter with new oil and fill the oil pan , pop the inertia switch , crank the engine to prime it up , reset inertia switch, start it up, recheck the level and your good to go... 190,000 miles and still going strong ... 03 S Crew 5.4 Lariat FX4

Why not just buy the inexpensive but quality motorcraft filter? Using a fram with all the negative information about them is just dumb.

Haven't tried it yet but I heard if you floor the gas pedal it does the same thing as poping the inertia switch but much easier. Might not work with drive by wire trucks though.
Then again it might be b/s. Haven't tried it yet!!
NUTS !! now I'm really confused !

Nah, not really. This is sort of old news now, but here yuh go, I posted this when the TSB arrived 03/2009. So yea, Ford chopped down the Motorcraft 820 (or Purolator, which ever you want to call it) last year -

MOTORCRAFT OIL FILTER PRODUCT CHANGE FOR THE FL820S

The length of Motorcraft oil filter FL-820S (F1AZ-6731-BD) is being reduced, allowing for easier removal and installation.

There are no changes to the performance attributes of the oil filter.

The smaller filter size will also result in the pallet quantity being increased by one layer or 120 pieces.

The chart below provides a summary of the changes:

Fram is much worse than that, - just hit the engines forum and search that forum only for, = "Orange Can of Death" lol.

richtfan Fram filters are junk nowadays, - they use to be good , but that was long ago. Search the engines forums for a heads up on Fram , -you don't want to do that to your engine. Don't wait to long, I mean if you don't know by now about the OEM update, chances are you've been running that Fram junk for awhile, - to long. Grab an OEM Revision only (Motorcraft) FL820s filter next time your at the candy store. Then crank your wheels to the right to make it real easy , -Install the new shorter filter. Motorcraft of course.

Good Luck

Mobil One in the 5w-20 has a HT/HS rating of 2.6 which is absolutely the bottom of the acceptable limits to be classified as a Ford spec 930. HT/HS is directly related to bearing wear wear. A 2.8 rating is considered normal, anything higher yields more mileage from the bearings. There are far better oils out there for far less money in this viscosity rated oil. You can easily run any Ford speced oil 5000 miles without any issues or expensive filters.

I believe the Mobil 1 EP is a lot better oil than the standard Mobil 1 - and if you are going to use it, use a Mobil 1 filter. You may have length issues though. You might as well just use a new style Motorcraft FL-820S filter and Motorcraft 5W20 semi-synthetic oil and change it about every 5k. Both products are available at your local Wallyworld and are relatively inexpensive.

You can always install a Remote oil filter system. Ford has them, Scrap yards have them. http://www.car-part.com/ has them = Used OEM. Summit has kits, but I wouldn't recommend. Some might.

Yea , you can change your oil filter fairly easy that way. A few shots of my set up, -

Wal Mart has the Motorcraft filters for about $3.50 and 5 qts of 5W-20 Motorcraft oil for about $9 IIRC.

Just changed mine this weekend.
