Help with replacement mirrors
Ok, before you guys bash me and tell me to use the search function - let me put it out there .... I have! I've been looking into this since I bought my truck 2 weeks ago and have not been successful. I picked up a '97 F-150 3 door w/ 2WD, automatic. According to my VIN lookup, it's a Styleside. My driver side mirror housing is damaged. You don't see any damage but when you drive, it shakes. It's a power mirror and non-heated. I can't live with it so I would like to replace it with an OEM/stock unit. I've tried mirrors from a 2000 Explorer 4dr and a more recent model Explorer but they do not fit. I'm guessing I need to go older or a completely different model. The ones for the F-150 that I see in my area are waaaay overpriced and I'm looking for an alternative cheaper route. What are the other vehicles and years that will fit my truck? TIA (I've noticed that I can't do much with a '97 - limited rim options, interchangeable parts limitations, etc. - why, Ford, why?)
you can use any mirror from a 97-03 f150 except a supercrew model. expedition mirrors will not fit either. i just went through this a couple weeks ago. ended up getting some power xlt mirrors for $60.
not sure what you mean by limited rim options, its the same size as the other f150s of the same body style. and aside from a few body parts, most things are interchangeable.

Starting in the middle of model year 2000 production (12/1999) they started using 14mm x 2" lugs. MY 1997 thru 11/1999-built trucks have 12mm x 1.5" lugs. Not sure how much effect this has on the availability or fitment of wheels/rims, but I think most are built for the 2000+ 14mm lugs.

I wasn't sure if any adjustment had to be made for the thinner lugs. If I remember correctly our wheels are hub-centric, so it wouldn't affect correct wheel alignment, but I wasn't sure if wheels with 14mm holes could be properly tightened on 12mm lugs. I guess it's not that big of a difference, really.
