Tire Size & Gearing Question
Tire Size & Gearing Question
After an hour of searching around and reading several threads, I'm 98% sure this will work, but I don't want any surprises later, haha. Anyway, would a 305/70/16 tire fit on a stock wheel on a 2WD F150 with a 6.5" suspension lift that's 1.5" wider per side? The wheels on the truck now are 16x7 and I think I measured them at 4 5/8" backspacing. From what I've gathered, it should fit with minimal rubbing, but I plan on removing the lower gray valance anyway, so that won't be much of an issue.
Also, can I run a 305/70/16 with 3.55 gears without blowing the transmission? I plan on regearing to 4.10 or 4.56 eventually, but I'd want to install the gears and a Detroit TruTrac at the same time, so I'll be running the 3.55s for a bit. I don't tow or anything and the only time I'm hard on the tranny is when I'm climbing up a 7% freeway grade or going off road (which right now means a dirt road).
Are gears fairly easy to install or something better left to the pros?
Also, how reluctant would a tire shop be to mount a 305/70/16 on a 16x7 wheel? I think the mounting spec for a 305 is at least an 8" wide rim, so I'm not sure how hard it would be to find a place that would mount them. Thanks in advance for helping.
