Sounds like it's grinding your flywheel bad .... there is no 'aligning' the starter/flywheel but sometin' ain't right

Sounds like the starter making the noise. IMO
Did they give you shims with the starter?

wow, no its from NAPA...but im guessing its the same thing? did your buddys truck ever quit doing it? Well i bought a starter with a 3yr warrenty at first and got a shim for it, but it grinded worse....so i went back and go the lifetime warrenty one, which the nose cone and the opening was completely different. installed it, still grinded a little bit but no where as bad as the first one....so yea FordRacing did your friends ever find a fix for that?

Was it grinding before the new starter and why did you purchase a new one ? Do you still have your old one ?

Bosch are OEM and their all lifetime warranties. Starters don't usually go out in these trucks. IMO you damaged the flywheel beyond repair. Not sure how you did that ? And no, there isn't a special line-up procedure.

Ford does have a TSB on the starter tho, but it's to do with your connections.

Good Luck.

Damaged flywheel beyond repair? nah i think the flywheels good, never grinded before, replaced the old starter cause it gave out on me, and with the napa lifetime warrenty starter it doesnt really grind anymore, no shims either so all is good in the hood!

Changed your mind huh. You said you had "two" new starters that grinded. Make up your fricken mind

BTW - This user has another thread in engines that talks about this.

yea that one was a continuation of my truck dying, and then i posted on here the starter noise. First one grinded, not to bad but bad enough to be annoying, after shimming it, it grinded worse, so took the shim out and just installed it normally and it grinded worse then the first time for some reason. Sooooo went back to napa, paid an extra $20 for the Lifetime Warranty instead of the 3yr warranty one, which has a completely different nose cone and opening, so i installed that one, and you could barley hear a tiny little grind at the very end, and then another user told me that these "auto store" starters will always have some sort of grind to them...but actually like i havent heard it grind really, it has gone away, so no, didnt change my mind....
The situation just changed a little on its own

if its the 4.6 or the 5.4. then the starters on these trucks do not have shims. shim will make it worse.

as posted above, no real procedure to align it. just place it in, bolt it down, and its good to go.

as for the grinding...its possible it will grind a little at first, not really supposed to tho. i would take it out and compare it to the original one (shoulda done that when you first bought it...)

me too

My starter is making a nasty grinding sound but it cranks the truck up but i replaced the original one 3 days ago and have been thru 2 advanced auto starters already. Whenever i hook them up they make this grinding noise and my dad said he seen smoke coming from under my truck. So with the newest started i got i will try to shim it tomorrow morning with shims i bought there at the store. And from whati was told shims will help alot. Also i have all my wiring hooked up right on the starters solenoid and my flywheel is alright i checked the teeth when i took the starter off.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I never heard of shims on these starters??? Rebuilt starters on these trucks cause all kinds of problems. Every time I installed a NEW STARTER,NOT REBUILT it never caused any problems. Stopped using rebuilts on late model fords, had to eat a lot of labor. here is a link! $50.00
