1997 - 2003 F-150

Rust problem

Rust problem

New member here, seeking advice. I have a 95 F150 XLT, 300 ci 6cyl. The truck has 43,000 original miles and is immaculate, until you look under it. I've had some issues with brake lines rusting and breaking, and this week, one of my transmission oil lines began leaking, which I repaired. In 1 day since, I discovered a broken leaf spring bracket, and I'm leaking fuel out of my rear tank. The underside of this vehicle is basically, rusting away. The frame, front end parts, all of the lines, cab mounts, anything with metal, and I'm not talking surface rust. I'm almost afraid to drive it, and with the fuel tank leaking on the exhaust pipe, I retract the "almost". I'm wondering if it's worth messing with. I can see a bunch of time and money being invested in this truck. It's a darn shame, because it is a beautiful vehicle, not the slightest bit of rust anywhere on the body or bed. I've owned this truck since it was new so I have a lot of money tied up in this thing. Any advice would be appreciated. --- gman

just replace the gas tank and both rear of rear spring hangers, get them from tousleyfordparts.com for employee cost, should be a little over a 100 bucks. brake lines and gas tanks and **** are common on older vehicles, My truck is a 00 with a new tank, straps, 2 brake lines, my dads 97 has 1 new tank and 1 new brake line and 2 new spring hangers...

You can try and go for the repairs.. But if you say its as bad as it is, your just throwing money away. The rust will continue to eat through everything and eventually won't be drivable without major upgrades. I say patch the fuel tank to get you around for a while so you can look for a nice donor truck with a straight body, good paint and no rust. Then go for a swap and you'll be good to go. That would be what I would do. Of coarse in my case during the swap process there would probably be a magically unidentified 460 that showed up under the hood.

You have a nice low mileage, decent gas mileage v6, but your truck is dying of cancer, I say patch it up to get you around and look for a nice donor.

You said its immaculate until you look under it, does the body have any rust? Or is it just on the frame and under carriage. You could find a low mileage donor truck that was rolled or something, swap your cab and motor.
