1998 5.4

I need to replace my engine in my 98 f150. I've allways heard the 99 engine is better than 98 engine. Is it true that i'll need the computer off the other truck to make the swap? Is this a good Idea. Are their any internal mods if I decide to rebuild the old engine to get more horse power. Thanks for any ideas Ford Son

NO, you will be aboe to re-use your current ECM but a tune is advisable

make sure you go with forged pistons and rods and a bump in compression won't hurt anything

cams, head work and long tube headers will help the motor also

5fours, -I like the 98 myself, the 99 is PI = more power. I believe the 98 has the better crank. How about a 98 with the 99 intake and heads. You'll net better numbers then any of the two by themselves.

Are you saying I can do a direct swap to the 1999 engine. I could put the money into rebuilding the old engine instead. The 99engine out of a wreck has 80,000 miles for $1,400 . I might have a bad crank the rod bearing went . It was running strong until the rod problem. Bob

nope. just the 99+ motors. the 4.6s didnt get the special treatment untill 2000 i believe. i dont rember exact numbers, but i think the PI 5.4 is something like 260-265 horse and the non PI is like 240-245. im not sure about the PI 4.6, but the non PI 4.6 was only like 220-225 or so. like i said, i cant rember exact numbers, but these should be a pretty good HP ballpark.

Right 99 for 5four , 01 for the 4six.

97 = 4.6L 220 hp V8
00 = 4.6L 220 hp V8
01 = 4.6L 231 hp V8

97 = 5.4L 235 hp V8
98 = 5.4L 235 hp V8
99 = 5.4L 260 hp V8

Thanks for all the help. I found a reman for $1750 for any year 5.4. They dont come with the oil pan ,timing cover or ,intake. I would like to upgrade to a 1999 or later motor . Will my 1998 parts go on a later block. The deal I would like to get is a roll over for the same price and have some spare parts . Anyone know how to find one in the Reno Sacramento area of northern Calif.
