Swap question
Swap question
I have been having some problems with my 97 4x4 4.6 manual transmission, and wandering around the local scrap yard found a 99 f150 that looks like its engine hasn't been touched, didn't have a lot of time to check out more on it but I will this weekend probably. Be about $200 for the engine, pulling it myself.
What I was really wondering is how advanced is a rebuild and swap of a project, I know its a lot of work, I'm just not certain what knowledge I might need that I don't have so far. I have read a lot of the threads involving engine swap and it doesn't seem to be too bad other than time.
So far I have been able to replace pretty much replace the whole EGR system, to include taking off the intake manifold and cleaning it. Switching out the fan for an electric one, and currently replacing the exhaust manifold soon as I can get a few more nuts/studs off. Oh and Oil changes, and changing tires and little stuff like that.
All of this was with help from here, google, a Haynes manual, and a Ford Master Tech that works at the hobby shop on base where I am. Is that enough really?
I know it might be a slow process as I will be going through the manual and google all the time to work on it, but is that really enough prior experience before taking on such a big project?
I really am interested in making it happen, and have always wanted to learn more about working on vehicles, and I'm sure this would be great at that, just don't want to bite off more than I can chew.
Oh and then if I do decide on actually wanting to do it, what are some things to check and make sure of before actually pulling the engine from the scrap yard to make sure its useable.
Thanks for any advice you may have.
