Tranny and Diff maintenance
Tranny and Diff maintenance
Next weekend im going do maintenance on my tranny and differentials. There's nothing wrong with them but i just want to keep them in tip top shape. Iv never done this before but i have a pretty good idea what im doing... i think???
For the diffs im just going to lossen all the bolts and pry the bottom open and let them drain. Pull them off check for damage or shavings. Re seal them and fill em back up. And same with the tranny. Also replace the tranny filter.
What kind of fluids do i need for the tranny and diffs. I know that ford uses a specific tranny fluid but im not sure what. What do i get?
And also any advice and imput that will help me do this would be greatly appreciated. I'm not much of a mechanic but i want to learn and be able to do it all on my own.

When I did my tranny on my my last truck (1999 4.6 2wd) it was a PITA! The tranny pan was overflowing when I removed most of the bolts, so it went everywhere (my tranny wasn't overfull) But other than that it was fine.
Yeah it does that. I had an 86 F150 which i didn't really give two ****s about. The son of a bitch wasn't shifting one day so i had to pull the pan and replace the filter. What i did was just barely loosen the bolts just enough to drop one corner down enough to drain it. I'm sure the same concept will work on this 99 but i really like my new truck so i want to make sure i do everything exactly right. That's why i started this thread so i can get lots of advice and input before i start this project this weekend.
On the fron diff, I wouldn't woryy about dropping teh cover unless, you see a lot of chips in the gear lube. It should have magnetic drain plug. The transfer case should use MERCON ATF (2 qts), front axle 75-90 gear lube (3.5 to 3.7 qts), and the rear 75-140 synthetic gear lube (5.5 to 5.8 pts if it is a 9 3/4 rear), with friction modifier if it is a limited slip. If you have teh 4r70 trans it calls for 13.9 qts of Mercon V, if it is a 4R100 it needs 15.0 liters of Mercon ATF (2x4), or 15.5 l (4x4).
Transmission fluid should be Mercon V, and you can also drain the TC, so you will get most all of it rather than just whats in the pan. Rear should be 75w140 synthetic, and if you have a LS rear, a bottle of friction modifier.

Another way to verify, is to jsck up the rear and spin one tire, if the opther side spins in the same direction, it should be LS, it spins opposite, thn it is open.

The front diff will use a different fluid. I believe it is 75w90, no friction modifier needed as it is not LS in front.
