Hooting noise on cold start up 5.4 175,000
Help, I start my engine up now and loud hooting noise pops up, sometimes lasts for about 30 seconds or when driven up to 3 miles before it goes away. I have 175,000 miles on engine. Took to San Diego this past weekend, great gas mileage and no problems up and back. Please let me know if you have had this problem. Truck is 2001 F-150 Lairat with 5.4 engine. Thank you. Jim in Yuma Az.
Maybe the serpentine belt? Could also be related to the oil filter or the weight of oil you are using. Have you kept up on your maintenance?

"Hooting" on Fords is usually due to an undesirable air resonance in the intake tract. Usually, the problem is the IAC valve, but there may be other causes.
You ought to hear the 2.5L Contours. The noise is so bad on them (when it happens) that the CEGgers refer to it as "moosing" instead of "hooting".....

check your ac clutch on the compressor, could have a bad bearing, and the idler pulley.....could always pop the belt off and start it up to see if it goes away, then you'd know if it was a pulley or not...sounds alot like a belt but maybe not.
