1997 - 2003 F-150

1998 trans. shifter

1998 trans. shifter

There is play in my trans shifter on the column. Is the worst when going to park. When trying to start truck you have to pull it to the left hard and play with the key or either go to neutral. Will adjusting the needle position with the wheel under the dash fix that also. Needle is a little off but not too much.

I had the exact same issue on my 01 Expo and its real kida scary once I found out the cause. Go under your dash lying on you back you will see with a flash light while plying with the column 4 troqes screws coming lose there like a t10 or t8. Mine where gold in color and very hard to see and get at but it can be done in 10mts or less. If you really cant find them I will take a pic of mine to show you where to go. John

I think he's referring to the physical slop in the shifter not the needle although pats post enlightened me to the needle problem. These screws bolts torx screws what ever they are an altogether different thing from the needle and are an actual hazard

I just read your posts and went to the garage to fix mine. Once I found the bolts, I relaized I was about 1.5 threads from being stranded. MANY THANKS for the info!!!

just fixed my dads the other day as well.. one of the torx screws came completely out.. his wouldnt even go into park..
