5.4 Ignition Coil Problem
5.4 Ignition Coil Problem
I Have A 2000 F-150 5.4xlt , and right now im havin ignition coil problems and a drain somewhere. I bought 6 New Coils I Put Them In and It Says Theres A Misfire in Two Of The New Spots I Put Them in..I took them out and changed them around still does the same thing.. There Aftermarket i think cause they dont screw down completely and im wonderin if that could thou it off a little or not? depending if theres a buildup on top of the spark plugs?
Hi Hooter , what exactly do you mean "don't screw down completely" ? Their not suppose to screw down tight, they move on that bushing to avoid stress cracking from the weather and engine vibration.
Sounds like the plugs, but why don't you start by telling us what brand of coils you installed and how you installed them, - did you use dielectric grease? If so, that could be reason for misfire. That may sound funny to some, but if done improperly it can deflect pulse.
Also, what spark plugs are you running? The only plugs I've heard of that completely misfire are Autolite and Bosch. Neither plugs meet Fords spec heat range and have done this in the past.
A little more info would help bud.

If you don't put grease in the boot area they have a good chance of not slipping down over the plug tip and going off/jambing off side of the plug causing a path to ground.
The coil should fit down into it's surface without hard forcing in place.
The top of the boot should fully engage the top of the 'plug well' so a seal against moisture is effected. within reason.
Also be sure there is nothing in the hole to interfere with the boot seating.

Hello Jbrew and Bluegrass.. I Bought New ones and I Think There Just A Stock One or Motocraft I Put Them On And Bolted Them Down But theirs a little play but u answered my ? with that..but i put them all in right i didn't grease them thou so im gonna retake them out and do that..but when i fired it up it through the check engine light and it said it was two coils are missfiring which are brand new
and the person who owned it before me broke the part on the coil to where you bolt it on and two of them are like that which are in the way back so there not even bolted down could that cause a problem? he jb welded it but the old screw is still in the spot and the new coil is just sitting in there? Thanks Guys its a big problem but if u need any more info ill let you guys know
