Engine starts and then dies.... WTH??

I have a 01 screw 4x4 with a 5.4l engine, 127k miles and never a single problem engine-wise. Drove home from work last nite no problems and went to let it warm up for my morning drive back to work. Started it and it died. Did this about five times and same thing. Runs for about a second and dies. What would have went bad overnight?? I'm no mechanic either but could it be a fuel pump, fuel filter or some sensor somewhere on the fuel system?

start with the fuel filter.. then get a gauge and test the fuel pressure. probably the filter. when did you last change it?

It was changed about two or three years ago. It will stay running if I keep my foot down on the accelerator. Does that sound like a filter?

Have a buddy at the ford place. Just called him and he said it sounded like my idle air control valve sticking.

My experience has been that when the Iac fails it just wont idle good. Couldn't hurt to replace it though with the miles you have. Probably be a good idea to clean the throttle body while your at it. I still think its a fuel issue.

Well, located the IAC valve and just could not get to it with my tools at home and was afraid I would damage the bolt heads that hold it on if I kept trying. So I went ahead and removed the entire throttle body and then got to it.

That sucker was filthy inside. All the workings inside of it was gritty and had a thick build up. Got it cleaned like new and went ahead and cleaned the throttle body as well as it was just as bad inside.

Truck runs like a champ now!
