Got a 2000 5.4 myself, I had troubles getting them off too. I got a oil filter wrench to get it off, now it wasn't easy but I got the wrench in there just right and could make small turns but it eventually came off

there is a special kind of oil filter wrench you can buy that makes it a whollle lot easier. its like a claw lookin thing that hooks onto a ratchet. im not sure where you can buy them though i just know i got one from the shop i used to work at. makes things much easier.

Bought the same thing. Claw with gears that get tighter as you turn. Not ideal, but it works. Think I picked it up off amazon for like $7 and free shipping. Certainly better than wrestling with the filter for hours doing small turns.

Yea, on my first oil change, I couldn't turn it off by hand, so I had to buy a wrench, then cut about half the handle off so I could make turns up in there. Now though, I just hand tighten, so when I go to remove it, I can just spin it off by hand. Much easier.

There are kits out there that you can buy that relocate it to a much easier location to access. Few people on here have them. If they don't post up, do a search or ask about it if you want to do that, and they can help you out there.

Not the same one I have, but the same principle:

Craftsman Universal Oil Filter Wrench, Auto-Adjustable

And oil filters should always be only hand-tightened, but if you can easily spin it off by hand months later, it may not have been tight enough, and you could be at risk for leaks. I always follow the "3/4 turn past contact" rule, and have never had a problem.

THIS is the one that I have. It only has one review (bad) on the the Craftsman site, but it's always worked well for me.

Ive got an 01 4.6, I bought a Oil Filter "D" wrench from auto zone. It looks like a small black cup with a bunch of little teeth on it, its made to fit directly around and on the teeth of a motorcraft oil filter, the you can attach a small 3/8 drive to it. It works great i put it on the oil filter then attach the drive give it a few turns then take it off by hand. There 6 bucks heres the link http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/accessories/accProductDetails.jsp?displayName=OilFilterWrench& itemId=774-10&navValue=100774&parentId=1311-10&productId=153160&fromString=&itemIdentifier=153 160_0_0_&filterByKeyWord=&categoryNValue=&store=16 71&skuDisplayName=93mm.dia.oilfilter"D"capwrench&c ategoryDisplayName=OilandFluidChange&_requestid=16 6745

they make oil filter relocation kits for our trucks, you can move the filter anywhere up to 3ft away from the original position.

If you use a K&N oil filter they have a nut on the bottom of it, all you need is a 1in wrench to get it off, they cost a little more but it makes it easy

I have an '03 XLT S-cab 4x4, 4.6L.
I cannot stand changing the oil because it truly is a ---PITA-- as everyone says.
I plan to install a remote oil filter, and found Trans Dapt kits on line.
I don't know the thread size which my filters screw onto... 3/4-16 or 22mm.
I am wondering if you can help me out with that?
I use the standard FL820S filter.
Let me know when you get a chance?
Thanks, nhford
