I did not notice a change, no knocking or anything and I've been running 85 for a year and a half.
I travel back and forth to the west coast every year, and not only have I not had any issues with 85 octane mountain gas, the truck gets excellent gas mileage on it. This truck has never pinged even once.

I run 93, but that is because I have a supercharger/custom tune

I would run what you owners manual suggests or if you have a custom tune, run what is required for that tune

Running 87, but I have noticed that my truck (160k) is pinging on the highway.

Any ideas? Would an induction cleaning help?

Run 93 in the summer with a tune and in the winter 87 and use shell gas every time.

Does the pinging go away if you use higher octane?

Sometimes my truck runs the 87 octane, but i recently changed the tunes and now run the 93 octane. I always use shell, cause it seems to run the best in my truck.
Like many of the previous posts have mentioned, unless your truck is tuned to run on a higher octane gasoline, follow the owners manual on octane ratings.
In the Higher elevations out west, I have run the 85 octane without any issues.
