Stupid Flanders truck --- Torn coil boot
Stupid Flanders truck --- Torn coil boot
I've searched all over for a fix after trying to replace the #4 coil in my 98 5.4 F150 after getting a P0304 code. I knew it's the coil since I replaced two of them since I got it new. It has 145K miles on it.
After an hour of blood and knuckle skin loss, I got the coil out but the boot stayed on the plug. I took the advice of trying to break it free with 11" offset needle nose pliers but that just ripped parts of it off. Is there any way to get the rest of it out of there other than taking it in?
I know...I should've put grease on it the last time but...
Any help is greatly appreciated..

You need to make yourself a small hook. Take an old flat blade screwdriver and bend the end in a vice so you have a small hook on the end. Then take this and insert into the hole and catch the bottom end of the boot with it. Pull from the top with some needle nose (with one hand) and pull from the bottom with your new screwdriver hook tool (with the other hand) and it will pop right off. I made one of these tools 10 years ago and I use it every time I have a stubborn plug wire or boot. It allows you to remove it without trashing the wire or boot in most cases. Good Luck
Grizz, you rule!
I made one, actually two, first from a flat blade screwdriver that proved to be a little too thick then used an old martini spoon that someone gave me as a useless Christmas present years ago. I fished it around in the #4 boot (worst one) a couple times and it came right out.
Many, many thanks to you, my friend!
