Long box tank under short box?

right now I'm working about 160 miles from where I live and like to commute back once in a while. I usually cruise about 80-85mph when I am commuting home and tired of carrying a jerry can in my tool box. My truck is a 2000 5.4 extended cab short box 4x4.

I know the exhaust might be a problem, but could you retrofit another short bed tank on the pass side? Just a thought....

The exhaust comes down the passenger side. I thought about mounting an auxiliary tank under niether something like shifties. I DON'T want one in the bed. I thought about putting one where the spare tire was with the fill up being behind the license plate like the old G body chevs and with the line just going into the main tank with a quarter turn valve as well, but I think if I could just get a bigger bolt in tank that would be ideal.

I understand where your coming from. Maybe the Ford dealership or someone else can get you some dimensions to see if there is some way to modify or even straight swap them.

Wonder if a smaller tank from a mustang would fit where the spare is, since they are designed for the rear of the vehicle. Just thinking out loud. =/

leveled on 33's at 80+mph I would be pushing it to make it back on one tank.

Yeah its about 16mpg at 85mph

If I keep the speed to about 55 I can get 24mpg.

So if I understand, you have the 25 gal tank and want the 30 gal one.

Me too!

I have a SCREW and have the same problem. I also have a donor Expy with the large tank and I will be doing this mod in the near future. Got hunting season to contend with now. I wish I would have made time to do it before hunting.

Thats exactly what I want. Let me know how that swap goes.

You done any measurements or anything to see if it'll line up?

What are you doing - trying to do a round trip on one tank of gas? Isn't there anywhere between your home and the job site to get gas?

yeah i like to round trips and don't like pushing the needle past 1/4 tank too often especially if I decide to come home in a head wind. Sometimes I will be coming home in the middle of the night and there are none open past 11.

I'd just carry a couple of gallons in the bed, or make you a new tank, there is plenty of room in front of the tank on 2wd, im sure 4wd you have a T-Case right there.

I have been under both and eyeballed the job. I can see attachment points and bolt holes are availible on my SCREW that should allow the larger tank. My worry is the fuel lines may need to be lengthened as the pump hole looks to be in a different spot.

I am subscribing in case any more info gets put here, but I won't be doing this till after the new year.

thats unreal. I'm cheaper than I am lazy. I don't like standing out in the wide open prairies freezing my ***** off while dumping the fuel in. A used tank from the local U pick is reasonable. I just don't feel like spending the afternoon rolling on the ground to get the tank out if someone has tried and failed already.
