Headlights Staying On?

I have a 1999 F-150 XLT Super Cab 4x4. After I shut the truck off my headlights always stay on for about five minutes. In the mornings at school people are always telling me that my lights are still on. Is this normal or is there something wrong somewhere?

Some vehicles have a delay on the lights but I don't think they have that on the 97-03 trucks. You might want to check the DRL module. I had the same thing happen, except my lights would not go off and drained the battery. The DRL module might be cracked letting in moisture which can corrode the circuit board causing a short. It should be located below the drivers headlight behind the bumper. You should be able to see it from the drivers side wheel well. I'll see if I can find the pics I took of mine.

I dont know if you've already checked this, but you can adjust how long the lights stay on with the dial next to the manual headlight switch.

I think it actually might have the delayed lighting because it seems to shut off after the exact same amount of time.

I am pretty sure that was a function that the 99+ got and like kansas said you might be able to adjust it.

Ya that is what I was thinking. I don't mind it it is just that I was wondering If there was a problem with something or not.

No problems... it's a optional feature.... I don't use mine...just rotate the Auto Dial down Till it clicks off.

I dont think there is any problem with it. If I were you, I would just adjust it so the headlights stay on around 20-30 seconds. That way you are still in eye sight when they go off, but you get the feature of being able to see where you're going with them on.

I have a 2003 f150 and it definatly has auto delay headlights... And all the dial next to the headlight switch does is dim your insrument pannel or turn on the doam light. My auto delay is only like 15-20 seconds and I was wanting to make it longer, does anyone know how to do this?
Thanks David

^ i think the auto lights you have are self timed..my dad had a 2003 and his were automatic..

i think the only way to adjust that is turn the automatic lights off..and just turn them on with the dial

I have that feature on my truck. You can adjust it I have mine adjusted to shut off in the shortest amount of time about 30 seconds. I like the feature. /dont have to worry about turning them on they come on in the dark automatically and all.

to the right of the headlight switch there is what looks like a dimmer switch. You just scroll it down to where it clicks that turns the auto light feature off. Scroll it back up just past the click thats the minimum time setting for it to shut off. The farther up you scroll it the more time they stay on after shut off.

I don't have any delay in my headlights, but, I don't keep my headlights on auto, I like to drive with fog likes on as well.

I don't have that second dial. But when I leave it on auto the headlights do stay after I get out. I guess there is no adjustment, I'm going to get the headlight switch with two dials and plug it in and see what happens. Thanks again David
