Gaskets and valance newb...

Ok...acquired a 98 F-150 2wd 4.2. It has connecting rod issues and rotating assembly is at machine shop ATM.

My first question is about the gasket issues I've been reading about on here. What did they change as far as the gasket material, and is this somethin that I have to purchase from the dealer, or is regular parts house stuff ok to use? I've used the search function, but really haven't found a concrete answer. I don't want to put this thing together w/o the correct stuff....

Second question is about being able to put tow hooks and factory fogs on. Do I need to find stock 4x4 valance for the same year truck, or does it take the whole bumper? Also, do they sell a factory fog lamp "kit" or do I have to piece it out?

Again, I've searched for a while, with not enough satisfying results...if someone could post some links to answer my q's that'd be cool too

Thanks guys, (can't wait to drive this thing!!)

Don't know about the tow hooks thing. Not into them, but gaskets are pretty much gaskets. Just don't buy the cheapest you find.

You would have to get the chrome 97-98 valance off a 4x4 truck for fogs. Or expedition. Maybe even a 2wd expedition. You don't have to replace anything else on the front end. And its to my understanding that a lot of these trucks are pre-wired for all options. (not sure about the 97-98s though) So your truck might already have the wiring for fogs. You would just need the lights and the headlight switch with the fog option. i think.

and if you want a new valance you could buy one from LMCtruck .com

the updated gaskets are thicker than the original gaskets to prevent the hydrolocking issue the 97-98 4.2s had

i dont *think* you can even get the thinner gaskets anymore. just make sure that the new gaskets you get are thicker than the ones you take off.

as far as fogs for your truck..
some 97-98s (the 4x4s i think) had fog holes in the bumper itself that you could use

but if you want fogs in your valence (the plastic part that bolts to the bottom of your bumper) youll have to do a 99+ front end swap. which would include the grille surround, header panel, bumper brackets, bumper, and valence of your choice (4wd, STX, and harley valences all have fog holes)

edit- certifit has good prices on the valences
