*SOLVED*front end vibration while turning from a stop

trying to figure out what it is. my 03 i just got 2 weeks ago has a vibration in the front end but only when i make a left or right hand turn from a stop. it does not do it when im already moving nor does it do it on take off going straight.

thanks to glc for all the help. come to find out he was exactly right. i had the truck in the shop today to get the tranny looked at due to issues with shifting which i tried to get help with in the tranny section to no responses. well the range switch went bad apparently.

i had them check the rear end while i was there and sure enough their going to put friction modifier in the differencials. said in about 200 miles the vibration would stop

Check the CV joints. Are you SURE it's coming from the front? Vibration from the rear in these conditions is very common if you have a limited slip diff - that means you need to change the lube and add friction modifier.

im assuming its the front because it only does it when im turning from a stop in either direction. is there a way to check the cv joints without just replacing them.

Limited slip clutches can chatter when starting up with the wheels turned. They will not do it at speed or in a straight line.

Look on the door jamb sticker and post your axle code, please. How many miles are on the truck? I'm asking you this just to see if LS rear chatter IS a possibility. We'll discuss front end after we see what's going on here.

At 87k, it's about time to change the rear axle lube anyway, recommendation is 100k. Try that first - it takes 75W140 full synthetic with friction modifier. Mine had been chattering for a while - when I changed it at 104k, the fluid was NASTY - and the chatter immediately went away.

Read the label carefully on the stuff you buy - some synthetics already have the modifier in it. If not, it's best to get it from the dealer, it's not expensive.

Tip - try to find a gasket for the rear cover if you do the job yourself. The factory uses RTV with no gasket - it can be a pain to get it sealed up. I know Autozone has gaskets for the 8.8" rear but I don't know about the 9.75. If you have a 5.4, you have a 9.75, if you have a 4.6 you probably have a 8.8. If you crawl under and can find the axle tag, you should see a "88" or a "975" on it somewhere.

I'm not equipped to do that kind of work any more, I take it to shops that I trust. Where are you at?

Just for your info, if you want to do the front diff, it takes 80W90 conventional gear oil. The transfer case takes Mercon V ATF as does the tranny.

For a reference point, Joplin Ford quoted me $125 to do the job with BG fluid and $140 to do it with Motorcraft fluid, their labor rate is $79.95/hr. I had it done at a local independent with BG.
