The old spare tire!

99 4.6L 2wd

I have never lowered my spare tire, went to lower it for the first time, I used the crank bar under the hood , it cranked about a 1/4 inch down, just enough for the tire to loosen up a little, but thats it. Wont come down at all!

Any ideas?

Spray everything down with some pb blaster. If not used, those will rust up badly.

I'm surprised, those are pretty durable. I have taken mine completely out before tho, -and cleaned the rust out of it. They rust on the inside as well. You have something stuck in their.

BTW- Those cables are extremely long. When my trucks 3' in the air, I can thro 3 of my tires on that cable and crank them up - to get them out of the way if the tires are off the truck.

When you get it loosened up - blow the housing out with compressed air.

Go up and down with it a few times or put a little more weight on the spare. Pull the valve stem if you have to, that will give you more room to work it free. K-Mac has a good idea to.

Good Luck

I use the spare when I rotate my tires at home. Even though it is removed maybe once a year, it's pretty cruddy with mud and sand. I can't imagine what it would be like after 10 years. You may get lucky and blast out the crud with just water and a hose-end nozzle.

You may want to replace the tire after 10 years anyway. The rubber is getting old and brittle.

It's normally found in grocery stores... next to the Jiff and Skippy. I prefer the chunky but, it's all a personal preference.

good luck getting it down, but you might just have to end up replacing the whole jack assembly

I'm an HVACR service technician and PB Blaster is the single best spary I've ever used on rusty stuck parts.
