Wink Power Loss

2001 F150 XLT
V6 4.2L
Automatic

Truck experiences power loss when going up slight incline (ie Overpasses).
Runs ok on level road. Accelerates ok if pedal is floored. Engine check light has not come on, but it is working.

Shut up Ethan... But seriously, I think all 4.2s suffer a bit going up overpasses. And it all depends on incline, speed, wind, etc.

What gears do you have in your truck? It may just be that your geared just right to where the truck falls off between shift points, where it doesn't need to downshift, but can't hold the higher gear either.....

I guess all who replied to this post are like me. I don’t have a clue and neither do any of you.
Now to comment on each reply

tatajerame For asking about maintenance. Thank you

MmmBuckles For the comment “it’s a V6”
Please outline in 10000 words or more just what you mean by that.
Also give your qualifications, ie Engineer, Scientist, Engine Designer, SHADE TREE MECHANIC, or smart *** so I may know if you know what you are talking about.

dirtyd88 For the comment “I think all 4.2s suffer a bit going up overpasses” Wrong. I have driven this truck in the mountains on North Carolina and Tennessee with no problems.
The problem I posted just occurred.

It could be the notorious PCV elbow. Have you checked for vacuum leaks and such? Typically a vacuum leak would throw a check engine light so I'm not really sure that's it.

Seriously man?

Tarajarame is one of the most trust mechs on the site, as he has some bad@$$ vehicles that only he works on, so I know he knows his stuff.

And I didn't make my comment because I have a V8. I also own a 4.2. These engines have just enough to make this truck be a truck. It's got it's pro and cons.

I may not know a ton about automotive, but from what you posted, there isn't much we can diagnose about your problem. You don't specify the amount of "power loss" you experience, so we can't give you accurate diagnosis.

So next time, be a bit more clear on what is going wrong, and include all info that would be pertinent to the situation.

shade tree mechanic by trade, smart *** because i can be.

replying with comments like this will get you no where on this forum. i was simply making a joke, most of the 4.2 guys complain about the lack of power going up hill.
As for Tarajerame, he probably knows more about these trucks than any of us, you would be wise to listen to him.
and to say to all who visit the forum to only make constructive comments is asinine. its a forum, we all come on here to make comments and state our opinions, you dont get to pick and choose who gets to comments on your threads.

Have a good day

OK, I’m back with more definitive information.
2001 F-150 XLT Electronic 4 Speed Automatic Overdrive
Purchased new Current mileage 39000+
All recommended maintenance performed.
I just came back from a test run and here is what happened.
Truck stumbles when you accelerate, even slight acceleration.
Idles ok. Runs ok on level road. If you floor the accelerator it will turn up 5000 rpm(I didn’t want to go any higher or faster). When using cruise control in a 45 mph zone and going up an overpass the truck will stumble and the transmission will downshift. I also went to AutoZone and had them check for codes even thou the CEL had not come on. NO CODES.
This condition started 4 days ago.

what brand of plugs were used? if they are not motorcraft then that's most likely the cause...

did you fill with fuel fight before the issues came up?

when is the last time the o2 sensors were changed?

I don't have a lot to work with here considering I'm on the other side of the internet

Spark Plugs are Motorcraft
Filled up with fuel about 15 days before problem started, checked gas cap OK.
O2 sensors have not been changed

check your plugs, change the o2 sensors and clean your air filter and MAF and then see where you're at...

does it do it when it's hot outside and you have the airco on????
