Question Grinding noise magicly fixed ???

First off I have a 2000 f150 4x4 .. The other day I came home after driving around for about an hour truck running great when I backed her into the driveway I heard a weird clank noise well I was home so I parked it ..

Next day I put it in drive to take off for the day and clank this time my tires screetched.. I put it in park got out to see if I had run something over and jumped back in. I put it in drive and I get this horrible grinding noise! And my truck doesn''t seem to want to move. so I immediately put it back in park and called for a tow.

Long story short my mechanic had it for two days now and says he says he has no idea whats wrong with it because hes been driving it with no problems.

Something I would like to note is that when driving it the day before this happened I had cycled through my 4X4 while driving just because it does not get used often. Not sure if that has anything to do with the problem.

Any ideas thoughts *or* suggestions are welcome.

actually yes, we did have a down poor of rain the day before. When I put it in drive I got the grinding of gears along with the abrupt stop and screech of tires though. What would cause the grinding of gears??

Did he pull the rear rotors to see if by chance one of the e-brakes shoes had separated and was causing the noise and dragging feeling. If it did, you would not be the first it happened to.

Not that I know of .. I don't believe he pulled apart anything seeing he is not charging me anything.

Yes, I made sure I told him exactly what was stated here. I think my only option may be to wait until it happens again?

Sounds like it, since it is really hard to figure out what is wrong when it doesn't do it for him.

Got it back yesterday.. I cycled through the 4x4 again and it makes the normal click sound when 4 high is engaged but it doesn't click when 4 low is engaged. I swear I remember getting an engaged click noise when I turned the 4x4 to either high or low. Could the low gears have gone and high gears still function ?? If so how would I test if low is working properly?
