not hard at all if you already have the console because they bolt in the same holes in the floor. I just recently did it and I love it. Don't have any pics of it yet but will soon. The other thing to is that if you have the grey interior it is really hard to find a grey expy console. And when you do they don't go cheap. I had to get a tan one and got some of the dupla color vinyl and fabric paint and fixed her up, came out great.
very easy. i actually did it before i realized it was even considered a "mod". here is a pic of the wide top i installed when i got my truck.

very true again. best thing to do is just keep hitting the junk yards. the "wide top" consoles are very rare & hard to find. a lot easier to find the "narrow tops". and if your truck already has a console (and the seats have the armrests) the narrow tops actually work better. here is a pic of the narrow top i put in so i could use the armrests again.
they can really vary in price. depending on what's included, the condition. only one i saw on ebay searching "expedition console" was this one.

this "mod" is pretty popular with the lightnings, although since they dont have armrests after the modification is done, they like the wide top versions. there were some that i saw for sale in the $175-200 range.
depending on if you have some junkyards around you, best thing to do is check them out. but you may not find one in perfect shape. most of the ones that i see at my local pick & pull are all damaged. but someone could search the yard & put together at least one good console out of parts.
i sold my widetop locally for $175. but i was lucky to find my new to me widetop & my narrow top in the conditions that they were in.
