Exhaust sound
Exhaust sound
Hello all,
Brand new here.. just bought a truck yesterday...
I got a Green 2001 F150 SCab 4x4 Lariat.. Really like the truck so far.. but for the 5.4L V8 engine, it is awfully quiet.. I'd like to give it just a little bit more of a truck "rumble," hah..
Now, this is mainly just going to be a work truck, so I don't want to put a lot of money into it, so I'm basically wondering, how much improvement will just putting an exhaust tip on make? And continuing on that though, what exhaust modifications would give me the best bang for my buck?
Thanks in advance for all the help!
Edit---I should note that the truck originated in California, so it has California emissions on it.. don't know if that makes a difference..

Thats kinda what I was figuring, but I've never looked into any exhaust stuff for vehicles..
So my next question is if I just cut out the muffler and go straight pipe in it's place, will I still pass smog? And also, will that sound like **** or give me the throaty sound I want?

Thanks for all the replies.. much appreciated.. After looking around the Exhaust/Intake forum and on youtube, I think I'm going to go with a Flowmaster Super44.. Think I'm just going to do si/so, though.
I saw somewhere you need an offset inlet, center outlet, is that correct?
And also, to match stock, is it 2.5" in/out?
Thanks again!

I did, indeed. It's not overly concerning though. If it was that huge of an issue, I'm sure that it wouldn't be as widespread and popular as it is.. Also, I'm guessing the hinderance to low end torque is minimal, seeing as I'm not changing anything other than the muffler and tailpipe.. the headers, cats, and pipe up to the muffler will still be stock. Might upgrade that later down the line, but for right now this is pretty much strictly a work truck. I just would like to have it sound like a truck. Not only would I like it more, but it would actually help with my job somewhat..
I do appreciate all points of view, however.. do you have any figures about how much Flowmasters hinder low end torque?

Why are you changing the tailpipe? All you need to do is use an extension pipe to the stock tailpipe.
Flowmasters are popular for 2 reasons - they sound good and they are heavily marketed. However, they do have a tendency to drone in the cab, which can get old.

While I have done work on engines (very minor, mind you), I know jack-all about exhaust and stuff... I just called a local muffler shop earlier today and asked them for a rough estimate on labor to change out the muffler for me.. They said I would need tailpipe also..
So what you're saying is that I could just have them swap out the muffler and keep the same tailpipe?
The shop did quote me only about $120 for the labor/tailpipe, seemed fairly reasonable to me, but again.. I have no idea.
yeah no need to change out the tail pipe just have them put on a single in single out, try for a Flowmaster super44 as it's the better of the flowmasters
there's a chart floating around here someplace that shows that magnaflow is not the best performance muffler but people still use it anyway.
magnaflow and flowmaster are both marketed pretty heavy and it all comes down to the personal choice of the sound...

Yeah, thats the one I am looking at.. having a hell of a time finding a local shop that has one in stock though, so I will probably have to order it online. Was hoping to have it put on today, too. :o oh well.
Just wanna verify the specs I said above, do I actually need an offset inlet/center outlet? And is 2.5" in/out correct for stock setup?
Thanks again for the help!
