Question Automatic gear shifter loose

I couldn't decide which category to post this in so I'll post here.
I have a 2003 F150 Screw 4x4 with an automatic tranny. The issue is the gear shift indicator on the dash doesn't always line up with the gear that it is in. It will often sit 'between' where it is supposed to be.
Also when in park I have to hold the gear shift up to get the keys out. I'm suspecting it's a warn out plastic part somewhere in the steering column but have no idea where to start looking since I've never taken one apart before. Where should I start to investigate this?

Thanks

There is a dial adjustment on the cable to the shifter. It's located underneath the dash.

we had an expy in the shop a little while back with the same problem. my tech found that there is a little bracket under the driver's dash area where 2 bolts were coming loose. and would not allow the shifter to go into the right gear. tightened the bolts down and everything was good.

Thanks for the replies, I found the dial adjuster and adjusted it a bit, took about 10 minutes, this solved the pointer issue but the keys still catch a bit when it's in park, but it's improved. I can live with it though. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Hey Guys, sorry for resurrecting a VERY old thread.. but..

I have a '01 that after years of me resting my wrist on the automatic shifter; the gear indicator is 1 place to the right of the actual gear. (i.e. When in D it shows 1st, etc)

Does this adjustment dial fix this as well?

WIll

I did a write up for the adjustment with pictures.

Sometimes the white bracket breaks, and there's a fix for that in my thread as well (a couple pages in the thread)
