Need Help

Well, I have a problem and I fear it is a bad one. When I am driving every once in a while the truck will feel like it is jumping, it seems to happen more so when going up a hill. I can usually fix the problem by accelerating, also sometimes there is a cicking noise with it. Also when I am stopped at a red light or in park it idles kind of rough, I do not have an rpm gauge, but I can hear it. The check engine light came on when all this started a couple of days ago. My truck is a 97 XL with the 4.6... I am going to the shop on monday, but if anyone has any ideas on what the problem is I would like to know so I the shock will be lessoned when they tell me I need a new transmission or something.

If the CEL came on, go over to Autozone and get the codes read out.

Wow so it may not be the transmission huh? That makes my day, there is a tech auto place around here and for thirty bucks they will figure out what the problem is, it is free if you have them fix it. And I do not know when the last plug check was I just bought it about a month ago. Just wondering though how would the plugs cause a clicking, or knocking noise?

For not much more than 30 bucks, you can get your own OBD2 code scanner. However, unless you are in California, most chain parts stores will read your codes free. Just make sure you get the actual "P" codes from them and take their recommendations for repair with a grain of salt.

A simple tune up would likely make it run like new.

Thanks for the advice, my dad has this mechanic he trusts 100 percent, so I will bring it too him because he wont fix something unless it needs to be fixed.

Its probably not the tranny. Lowgrade missfires are mistaken for transmission problems all the time.

Does this guy replace one spark plug or one plug wire at a time?

I guess I am not sure. He said he changed the wires, the check engine light is still on, but now it goes off every once in a while. However the missfireing is gone.

Ok I just got the codes read. It is P0401 EGR Flow Insufficient. It said it was one of two codes, when I scrolled down to read the second code it said the exact same thing besides that there was a box that read pending. The guys at Advancded auto parts told me it was probally just a piece of carbon stuck in the valve and to just erase the code.

What do you think?
