97 fog light switch

my brother has a 97 f150 4.6. lots of mods, blah blah blah.

we installed a set of autozone fog lights behind that hole in the middle of the bumper.

here's my question... his truck did not come from the factory with fog lights but his headlight switch will still "pull out" as if to put it into the fog light "on" position. so is there a wire somewhere i can splice into that will allow me to wire the new lights up as if they were factory?

thanks for the help

also... how do you remove the switch from the dash to get to the wires behind it? i tried to pry it out and i think i just broke the cover off ?

thanks guys, really need your help right now

I got you on this one.

I just hardwired my fog lights to a actual switch. Here is what you have to do. Where your light switch is there should be a black/grey/tan panel. (Tells you whether you are on parking lights or headlights) There should be a little space on the bottom in the middle of that small panel. Crack it open and then you have to take a flat head screw driver and the whole unit will pop out. Now, I am confused where you say that it has the fog light switch but no fog lights. It must of been replaced earlier. So clear that up for me. Continuing... what I did was I got a meter out and then tested all the wires by turn on and off the fog light switch. After that, just get a switch, mount it to where you want, then run your wires to it and solder, done. Please ask me if you have question, I will post pictures if I need to.

Hope I helped.

Your brother's headlight switch will seem like it pulls out like the actual fog light switch does, but it doesn't do anything. My truck has fogs and my headlight switch went bad a while back. The only switch I could find in the junkyard was from a truck with no fogs. You're right, the switch seems like it pulls out just like my old one does but there is nothing there (no actual switch) to operate the fogs. It probably pulls out a bit because that is how you remove the switch housing. You are supposed to pull the switch out a bit and then release a tab holding in in from behind. That somehow unlocks the whole housing from the dash...at least that's how its supposed to work. I just got a flat blade screwdriver and pried it out from the dash since the old switch was no good anyway. I'll let you know in a few days how its actually supposed to come out since my new switch (w/ fogs) should be here any day.

also, if you can get hold of a switch from a truck with fogs, i'm sure you could do some testing with a meter to find out what wires are supposed to work the fog lights, i don't recall there being very many back there. once you figure out what wires work what, just splice your new fogs into that and BAM! factory operating fogs. at least thats the idea haha

Basically what he said is the same exact thing as i said....as long as you have a wire that gets hot when you pull the switch out (although your switch may not work), just get a meter and test it and thats what you need to wire your foglights to.

One more thing, if you just don't have the patience or want to spend the time testing wires, just get a switch and mount it to where ever you want and then go from there.

( I mounted mine on the plastic dash piece under my gauge cluster)

Like I said if you want pictures or need any more help, let me know.

Here is the diagram, if you are sure you got a 1997/1998 headlamp switch with the fog lamp option. The 1997/1998 switch ground at the fog lamp relay coil.

Some get switches for their truck, and are actually given a new version ( 2000 + ) This is the diagram for the ramp mod change, else it would work as normal ( ignore the notes ) This version switch power to the fog lamp relay coil.
