Fuel Filter Leak

I've been smelling gas around my truck lately and today noticed the fuel filter seemed to be leaking on the inlet side. I replaced the filter but didn't notice anything unusual about the nipples on the old filter. The new filter does not appear to be leaking now, but I'm concerned that maybe it is the line itself or the connector that may have been leaking. Is this an unusual problem? Any info or opinions would be appreciated.

The filter was changed about 20K miles ago and the truck has 122K miles. '00 F150 with the 5.4.

I would say go ahead and check that you pushed the connector all the way into the filter inlet. You have to push it all the way until it clicks and locks on. If it is connected all the way and it is still leaking, you might have damaged the connector when you took it off the old filter.

The old one was leaking, not the new one (so far at least). Both ends clicked just fine. I just have never heard of a fuel filter developing a leak.
