2000 F 150 Air Intake box *HELP*

I opened up my air filter box, the OEM one and inside was the filter then in front of it was a roundish thing which I guess goes inside the filter... Anyone know why is it there, it seems more like a thing that causes obstruction for more air... Thanks, I would post pics, but Im really tired and havea project.. thanks guys.

I'm talking about the tube that goes into the fender. I found this round thing... its here in the picture on top of the dirty air filter... Its not attached to the air filter though. I popped open my air filter and this was just laying in front of the hole?? what a total obstruction to the air coming in!

Also what are these tabs, I'm guessing its to support the round thing

Once again thanks!

I'm not 100% sure on what you are referring to, can you upload a picture for me?

I'm thinking it's the end cap of an old filter but without a picture and being on the other end of the internet it's hard to say

I'm guessing the tabs you are refferring to are the ones that hold the clamp in place

You know what that is - That round deal comes from those cheap Fram filters. It falls off after awhile and the filter is then BY-PASSED.

I thought that filter looked a little clean lol.

Don't ever buy fram replacement parts. Specially -

PVC valves
Oil Filters
Air Filters

That company needs to be burn't to the ground.

Look at what Labnerd posted -

Thanks Pat! its a 4.6 L F-150, So should I remove that round thing.. I think its pull because it blocks the air coming from the fender, but then again it protects any debris and it goes into the filter, once i get cash i will head out and buy... J Brew thanks.. I guess I need to buy another air filter... go to carquest once i get some $$$ thanks! lol @ the other posts, I freaked out too!

No problem. The fender insert looks a little different, but that may be because I'm seeing yours from the inside.

The intake in the back by the door is from a 2001 - Never mind that contraption in front lol.

This is from a 98 4.2L. The v8's share the same type element. Anyway, stock air filters look like the one below, except much cleaner of course lol.

Don't ask

Best filters made for these trucks are from Amsoil. You can't really appreciate the filter unless seen up close.

BUT - The WIX and OEM Motorcraft do a great job. DRY elements are far superior than OILED.

Thanks JBrew for telling me that, I definately will get a dry air filter ASAP! I'm not that interested into getting something that I have to oil time to time, Especially things that need to get sprayed, I might over spray it lol.
I thought I had a DIRTY air filter, but DAMN yours is like your whole engine been in the MUD! My air filter looks exactly like the first one you posted, and thats a nice aftermarket cold air intake your running. I'm guessing its a "oiled" air filter? Does that do a nice job with the dirt.. I dislike the ones that are not enclosed because doesnt it suck up more dirt? Anyways im still considering it, even though I said I won't.

BTW, Could you help me out cleaning my MAF... I got lost after reading the part saying "take out the tabs, pull the wires out, but dont rip it apart..etc"

I don't run any of those posted above. That home made job up there was the first one I made way back when. I new I shoulduh cropped that out of the pic dangit - Posted that one for the stock air box set up. I run this one with a WIX -

MAF? Pop the MAF wire grommet (the rubber deal) - slide it down the wire harness oohhh - -about 4 inches or so. With a screw driver and at the filter back stop, pry a little on those plastic tabs pulling a little at the same time. She'll pop right out of their.

Because you slid the grommet down first, you'll have enough slack in the wire harness to access the MAF. You'll need saftey torx bits/drivers to disassemble further.

If your aiming to clean the wires, don't use that MAF cleaner junk - Windex does a better job than CRC lol - I'm serious!

The very best MAF cleaner is either one of these products -

Of course your running the volant, I think enclosed is better too and thats looking like a beast. I hope I can get one of those sooner or later... not sure if its worth it on a 170K engine... Wow, your daughter did all of that huh, how old ?

Im still losts, probably even more, but I'll see what I can do I'm sure my dad has some torx bits/drivers around... Thanks on the cleaning products because I doubt they sell MAF cleaners around here... f**k can't wait to get of this island.

Anyways, like if anyone even cares, changed the air filter, NAPA GOLD filters. Looked similar to the FRAM, but different round thing. Looks way better and cleaner. I have a couple of questions though, on cleaning the MAF sensor... Pics will be on soon...
I changed filter and just sprayed some Electronic Clear into my MAF.. not sure if thats ok.. Changed oil n filter today.
