2001 f-150 with 96 cab??

Hows it going everyone? well yesterday i went to my buddy's uncles junk yard and they had a 2001 f-150 reg cab and reg bed everything look fine on it but the cab was smashed looked like it rolled a few times so he offered it to me for free because he knows i like fords and I'm looking for an off road toy. The truck has a v6 i was thinking about pulling that out and dropping a 5.0 in it but before i get in to this project i had a few questions for you guys. I was thinking about building a pre-runner but for one i like A-arm over I-beams but i really like the 96 cab style and i could also get one for free. I was wondering if its possible to put a 96 cab on a 2001 frame? i was hopping you guys would know if its a straight drop in or is there going to be some or a lot of fabrication work.
Thanks
Mike

Frames changed in 97. But with the right equipment and time and money, anything is possible. I would however start with the correct frame due to the fact that all the brackets are in place and whether it was two or four wheel drive doesn't matter on the frame or steering from 80-96. 97-04(Heritage model) had two different frames for two and four wheel drive. You will be way ahead of the game to start there, if that is the body style you want.
