1998 5.4 running rough
Tonight I sprayed some starting fluid around the injectors and found 2 that we sucking air- not good lower seals on em. I bought new seals but decided to go ahead and replace those 2 injectors as long as I had em out. I always kinda though tit acterd like a vacuum leak, never thought about it leaking there. Or maybe I just tore them up tlast weekend whenI pulled all the plugs to look for a cracked 1. Seems to be running better but I have said THAT before! We will see.

Common guys, you have coil problems. These trucks are well known for them. Low grade misfires are the worst. No CEL - It's a b^tch. $80 will get yuh a new set of coils. - It will most likely feel like a new truck once their replaced.
The windings break down over time. Instead of pulling you hair out and spending money at the dealership, just swap them out.
If you would rather have the dealer look at it, you have to go in for a stress test. The stress test is the only way to reveal a low grade misfire. You can have them all bench tested thru the WDS and have just the bad ones replaced, but, it's just easier for most to purchase a new set from ebay and be done with it.

Jbrew, I really appreciate all the advise given and certainly wasn't sayin ANYONE is full of do-do. I am just very frustrated. Where can I get new coils for 80 and should I replace the plugs while I am in there? I used Motorcraft before, stick with them. Thanks again and sorry if I seemed rude. Just hard to belive I just replaced all coils 6 months ago and now looking at doing it again!
Thanks,
Dave

Yea , the only time I stock up on Mortorcraft is when I can get them cheaper than Globals. I've purchased Motorcrafts before for $65 a set. Crate motor take offs. I liked those - New coils, new bolts . -

Purchased these kits for awhile - They were more expensive $130, but the came with a set of plugs. Wish they still sold these kits, I know I could knock the price down lol -

I ran those coils above for 2.5 years. Nothing wrong with them, -wanted a fresh set, so - just started running these and like them - their GAMA's, sold by Global. I know the seller pretty good now - I buy the 10 packs for around $67/69 (can't recall, -think it was 69)

When/if you purchase a set, -flip a motorcraft over and compare to these. Yea, they all come from the same import /export supplier lol.
Anyway, I think the 8 pack is less than $80 now, - with a Lifetime warrantee. - Just try taking a bad Motorcraft coil back to the dealership lol. - Get them here -

DG 508's are what your after, - no dodo.

I put the Summit COP's in, like I said, about 6 months ago, they were like $270 for 8? Anyway thanks for the link, I guess I'll try changing em out. They definately have em for $82 with shipping. Thanks!
What about the plugs? I put new Motorcraft in when I changed out the cops, I pulled all the plugs a couple weeks ago and they weren't cracked or anything. Do you think I should change them too, while I have the cops out? It's alot more work but easier now than later lol. What brand plug do you use, motorcraft ?
My only mystery is why the truck runs better after 10-15 minutes. Is the computer adjusting to the crappy cops or the cop starts working better when warm?
Anyway, I guess I will order em and change em out next weekend.
Thanks again,
Dave

Well what's going on with it now ? It's usually the opposite, - when a coil has a low grade mis, - should run good for a short time after reboot, then progresses right back to the problem pretty quick, if it still exists.
No CEL, Blinking CEL's ? Nothing ? Push the motor right were it begins to act up - Give it hell right then. Watch for a blinking CEL, then off. Code Stored. Blinking CEL = Misfire detected and that's all it means (dedicated) - If it's flashed at all in the past, have it scanned or pick up a scanner yourself, their only $60 -70 bucks.. If you can.

Yeah, thats what has been bothering me since this started, like I said in my first post after 10-15 minutes it seems to run ok. Just shuddering and hesitating when first started, especially when trying to maintain 30-40 mph. I drive a short distance to work, about 3 miles and usually does it all the way home. I know those short trips are hard on an engine. I drive it alot elsewhere too though.
Anyway, good suggestion to try to force a code by pushing it when its acting up. I'll try it today. I can scan it at autozone for free, see if I get any codes to come out.
Thanks,
Dave

Sounds like your PCV system is plugged up. The PCV system enters the manifold close to the IAC valve - So that loads up as well. Everything has to work together in relation to your Intake air - more so when cold. When warm, the O2's take over.
Look under you oil filler cap - See how much crap there is in there lol.
If your running a FRAM PCV valve, change it back to Motorcraft. Fram doesn't make a Ford valve to spec. Margins are way to tight, very bad for the motor - it can't breath.

I'm havin this problem myself and yet to figure it out the check engine light came on today. So I got to get to autozone mine will do it about 35 to 55 actin crazy like it's skippin and jumpin... I bought this truck and it had 67,000 miles a 1 1/2 ago and now it has 80,000 now its a 2001 ford 5.4 NEED HELP THANKS!!!
I have read on here not to wash the motor?? If this is true I washed it off a week ago.. I guess I done screwed up again.. And by the looks of changin the plugs and coils or whatever you call them I'm screwed I don't know if i can handle that.. I might be goin to the dealer.. I think i'm goin to reset the check engine light them if it comes on again go to the parts store and get the code and go from there... what yall think???
while it's missfireing ( get a friend to load the engine up so it misses good) unplug one coil at a time when you unplug the coil that dont seem to make a difference that's your bad coil, pull it and check for moisture, more than likely it will be the 2 front passanger side ones, if not one of the rear ones. just start with the easy to get to ones first.
