I have a 2001 Ford F150 2WD 4.2 V6 and noticed it was leaking large spots on to my driveway. It was driving fine but I checked my fluids just in case. Everything was fine BUT the antifreeze. It was almost dry as a bone. I quickly put some antifreeze in it and it stopped leaking. My father told me that although I was low on anti freeze, that was not what was leaking. Although the leak has stopped, my truck is giving off a somewhat bad odor, which seems to be an anti-freeze smell. Any thoughts or suggestions? -JP

 

if i were you i would check your intake and head gaskets. pull a coulple of your plugs out and check if there is coolant in your cylinders. i just had to replace my head gaskets. if it is your head gaskets use some of that liquid glass sealer. but you have to do it step by step or it will not work and you will have bigger problems. if you have any more questions let me know

 

By 2001, the dreaded intake gaskets have been updated. These motors don't blow head gaskets, because they are MLS gaskets. Multi layered steel. Only ones I've seen go bad were due to gross neglegence of the cooling system. You need to pressure test your cooling system. You could have anything leaking: a heater core, heater hose, water pump, thermostat, thermostat gasket, coolant sensor, freeze plug, radiator, radiator hose, coolant reservoir bottle, etc, etc. Don't try to fix this on a whim. You need to determine where the leak is, then fix it. Do not add a bottle of "fix a leak". This will only cause problems down the road.
