Angry Check engine light - Oil Change

I did a search but couldn't find a post about this problem.

My truck has 130K, 2001 4.6L and I bought it a few months ago. We went from Houston to Austin for Christmas. So before we left I wanted to get the oil changed. It was time anyway. The Pennziol place didn't have 5-20 just 5-30. They said that an older engine could use a little heavier oil. I figured that sounded right to me. Guy at O'reilly's said they are wrong about that. Then they showed me that the belt had some dry rot. So I went ahead and replaced with them. Then the rear axle was so low that they couldn't check it. I looked and no fluid was coming, which would be what I would expect. So I went ahead and got the flush and fill. The next morning the check engine light comes on when I get gas. I have always run regular. I was taking my focus the next day and brought my owne 5-20. Its a 2007 and low miles. They said that my truck needed plugs and wires because it a cylinder is missing. Well it seem like I would notice a miss and get horrid gas milage. I don't think that would cause the check engine light to come on all of a sudden. I do plan to change the plugs and wires but DIY. I tried putting a half tank of mid grade in but the light is still on. Any ideas?

you will need to check you codes, I have heard Autozone will do this, I got a Superchip programmer and I can check the codes on my f150 and my wife's Expy, its allready saved me alot of money doing it myself...Hope that helps alittle...

Sorry did they all ready check your codes?? I don't know how they knew you needed all plugs and wires changed since you mentioned it wasn't missing???

Nope, they didn't check the codes. He told me it looked like the plugs had never been changed. That is not the case. I forgot they will do that at Autozone. I had a Inifiniti a while back and the check engine light was always going off. They pulled it a couple of times. I guess if I want an answer that's what I need to do. I looked to see if a vacume hose was pulled off but couldn't find any problems. Thanks for the input!

Your right. Mine has coils too.
There is a missing cylinder. Hopefully its a plug.

No codes! Autozone said there were no codes.

if your check engine light is coming on then its throwing a code. and a bad coil/plug will cause it to misfire, thus making the light come on. if you havent changed the plugs yet, its probably a good time to do that. if i was you i would take it to a better shop and have them look at it. changing the plugs and coils is a DYI thing, but it can be pretty difficult if its your first time and they have never been changed before. but a shop is probably gonna charge a pretty penny for them to do it. if you look around the site a little more you can find tons of threads on how to do it. its really not that hard
it could also be your fuel filter. a truck that old with original plugs probably has the original fuel filter too.

Yeap, I have little doubt about that now.
I should have changed it myself, but I didn't have time. Plus a house full of relatives that would be out in the driveway giving their $.02 cents.

I didn't find any how to's just alot of chatter. Here are some threads. I have a Chiltons manual. What a piece, there are more directions with the Westin nerf bars or at least Westin has two pictures, ha ha.

I can't find it this morning but last night there was a post that recommended getting a 7 or 8mm swivel scoket, which I think is a really good idea looking at the engine bay. It also said they used an impact wrench. I am kind of shocked. Are they using an impact wrench on the spark plugs? Won't they break off or strip the block.
