CD player install

Just bought an indash cd changer for my F150 to replace the stock single disc cd player. Do I really need to disconnect the battery so the airbag doesn't go off in my face, or is that a pointless disclaimer?

Well I did it without disconnecting battery, still alive.

But I do need help. On the back of the changer is a white piece of plastic with a slot, and in the back of the cd player void is a bar, that I assume is suppose to slide into the slot. That is next to impossible to do, so would the cd player still work if I took the white plastic piece off, and didn't slide it onto the bar?

Here is the picture of the white piece of plastic. Do you think it is needed, b/c the cd player wont slide all the way in. So my dash is all popped off, waiting to finish install.

Yes the CD player still works. None of the after market unit's I've ever seen have these plastic bars. I wouldn't worry about it.

I already took it off . I'm a little impatient and couldn't wait. It works great, but it still doesnt fit all the way. It looks like the channel the whole cd played slides into, is too small for the added size at the top the cd changer has. It gets almost all the way in, then it wedges at the top, and cant go any farther. The top lip is pretty much in, but the bottom lip of the face isn't all the way in, sits flush with the dash cover though, so it doesn't look bad. Just kinda funny with the slight slanting angle. Anyone else have this problem?
Not to big of a deal, I could always dremel a little away, just kinda worried about plastic dust getting in the electronics in the dash.

On a side note: I see you have a brush guard. How in the world did you get that thing bolted in. I took my tow hooks off. Front bolts come out, left the back ones in b/c of that lose brace in the frame. But how in the world do you get brush guard on? The mounts on mine are one bolt hole up front, with a slot cut out for the back ones, but there is no way to slide the mounts onto the bolt. I was just going to take the rear bolt out, but then the back brace in the frame would be free. Any tips from when you did it?

Here are some pictures of how it sits. See how the bottom pokes out some?

Any thoughts?

There is most likely a piece of plastic in the dash that slants down and to the back (if you are looking through the stereo hole opening) at the top. You should be able to break or dremel this peice out and at least get the CD player to sit a little more verticle. I know there are a few more things in the way behind that plastic, but it probably should make it fit nicer.

I was just playin around yesterday on my 97, seeing what it would take to make the CD player out of my 06 fit....not gonna happen

Yea, thats what I figured. Was kinda worried about putting the dremel back there b/c it creates soooo much dust. But I guess it is worth a shot. New cd changer is awesome though. Man I love the classifieds here.

Yeah.. the brush guard was a joy to install... Three big guys and me. If I remember right the bracket goes behind the tow hooks. It bolted in a few different places though. I did remember having to remove them. It's going to have to come off anyways so I can repaint it. It was a bear though. It was well worth the $125 I paid for it NEW. I'll get you some pictures of that thing. It was hard though.
