02f150 engine swap
02f150 engine swap
Hey guys,
I have an 02 f150 w/the 4.2 engine. I've decided to invest more into the truck to build it into how I want it.
I'm thinking of maybe investing in a rebuilt lightning motor but I'm don't know if it would even fit. I'm not very savy mechanically but I'm wanting to learn from my friends and family who have alot of experience. But before I even start searching for an engine, could anyone tell me if it'd fit in the engine compartment which currently holds a v6.
Thanks,

it should work plenty well. you will have to pull everything out, and start from an empty engine compartment though. and have to change all the computer/pcm/ecu etc....IMO it doesnt seem worth it.....

You may need to change the motor mounts but I'm not sure.
You'll need the engine wire harness, maybe the computer ( depends on the tranny you go with.
Here's one on ebay with the computer and tranny if you want the tranny.

You will definitely need a stronger tranny then whats in there now!
Phil
The engine will fit fine and even bolt into the trans.
I believe the motor mounts will have to be changed
The engine wire harness will be needed/ and id take the PCM as well.
The tansmission as long as its an Automatic it will be the same 4r70w (the one in the L might be built stronger but is still the same trans) I BELIEVE.
ALSO something for you to think about is the REAR AXLE yours is a 8.8 and it WILL not hold up to the 5.4 supercharged engine. Think about swapping it out for a 9.75.

hi, all modular, 4.2, 4.6, 5.4 use the same mounts. computer won't have to be changed unless tran is changed. however, custom tuning will be required. the Lightning is equipped w/ the 4R100. n/a 5.4's, auto 4.6's and 4.2's have the 4R70W. 2WD and 4WD transmissions are NOT interchangeable. if your truck is 4WD, and you intend on a 4R100 swap, you will need the 7700 series torsion bars, new trans. crossmember, PCM, driveshaft modifications, among other things. it is not an easy swap. many have sucessfully built up their 4r70W's, and saved thousands.
the exhaust certainly won't bolt up. just get the 5.4 manifolds, and have a muffler shop fab you up a true dual exhaust with a good straight through muffler and 2.5'' piping.
definitely get the new harness, screwing with your current one will be a PITA.
x2 on the axle swap... the 8.8 won't hold up very long under the abuse of a s/c 5.4. JMC's truck broke three 8.8's when he swapped to a s/c 5.4 before he switched to the 9.75.
in any case, it may not be a bad idea to grab everything if you can, having extra parts is better than not having enough.
