Raptor Drag Race Showdown: New vs. Old
Does the Loss of Two Cylinders Matter? TFLT’s Raptor Drag Race Results Say No
When Ford dropped the bomb that the new Raptor would employ the Ecoboost V6 in place of the ol’ V8, the Internet almost exploded. Most of the reactions can’t be posted here (out of respect for our young readers), but suffice it to say they weren’t positive. But how much does it really matter, in the real world? The Fast Lane Truck arranged a 2014 and 2017 Raptor drag race to find out.
The numbers would have you believe from the start that the old Raptor doesn’t stand a chance. The 2017 is 500 pounds lighter, and despite the loss of cylinders, pumps out 39 more horsepower and 76 additional lb-ft of torque. And in the case of our test comparison here, the old truck is a heavier crew cab while the new one is an extended cab.
So it comes as no surprise that the 2017 simply walks away from the 2014 in a straight line. Even at a mile above sea level, the new Raptor manages a 6.17 second 0-60 time. That’s well off Car & Driver’s recent 5.0 second recording, but still light years beyond the 2014’s 6.7 second time. TFLT doesn’t mention any times in regards to the old truck.
That time also makes the 2017 Raptor the fastest truck that TFLT has ever tested. So if you’re in the market for an incredibly fast truck that can run with a lot of sports cars, the new Raptor is it. Consider it a bonus that it also happens to be the baddest off road truck currently in production.
