NHTSA Investigating F-150 Ecoboost Acceleration Issues

F-150 Ecoboost owners that have had issues with stuttering trucks might be getting some vindication soon by means of the NHTSA. They’ve officially begun an investigation into issues after receiving 95 reports of poor performance under sudden acceleration. Essentially, the truck would go weak when you need power the most. You can imagine mashing the gas and getting nothing could lead to some hairy situations.

Ford has already released three technical service bulletins in an attempt to remedy the situation. Apparently, the intercooler accumulates condensation in the charge piping under partial throttle highway cruising conditions. When the throttle is opened fully, the water is sucked into engine causing stuttering and power loss.  This probably explains why a third of the issues were experienced in wetter weather.

This issue is part of the reason for that lawsuit levied against Ford a few weeks ago. To their credit, it’s not that often you hear about parts being too efficient. Let’s hope they clear up this issue before it causes any accidents.
